Gee, FFG, when you put it that way... ![]() I'm woefully behind on any FFXII news, but I also recall reading that Ashe and Vaan were siblings way back when. This was likely during the early stages of development, and before any delays were announced (didn't even know there WERE delays ).I don't know if they've changed things around, but there's always a chance. I have to agree with Inuyatta in that I'm getting tired of main/main romances as well. It's been not only a FF stereotype, but a common stereotype in so many mediums for so long that something new needs to be done. I was very happy to know that the main female, Ashe was married, to be honest. What a change from the typical single bachelor/bachelorette that saves the day!I guess I wouldn't mind terribly if her hubby died, but I would love it even more if she remained devoted to him instead of falling for Vaan instead. ![]() Sibling love can be just strong and intense as romantic love. Some of the saddest, most heart-wrenching scenes in anime I remember are those between siblings. (Although they also become fan-fodder for incestuous romances between siblings in their respective fandoms. ).And it's silly of me, but Vaan and Ashe look to much alike for me to want to see them as lovers. *waves sibling flag* |

the girl who becomes a prince

I kinda liked the idea Ashe still hung up to her husband. I mean the scenes of her marriage and all those cute creatures in the parade, she looked so happy. When saw the guy she married to receiving his sword the King presented him to, you can see her smiling proudly. And the fact that she seems to be carrying his sword and imply she's on a quest of vengeance is appealing to me. I can't see her having a romantic relationship with Vaan, but this is my imagination running off. We'll have to wait though. |

It's possible her husband has lived from one of the trailers, Basch looks like he's carrying him out but its hard to tell if he's alive, so maybe Ashe will end up with her husband in the end?

Or maybe her husband became the bad guy (the armored character as the FFXII logo)? |

Armoured guy is one of the judges but yeah I think Lord Rassler might end up a bad guy, would make a nice twist if he was :) |

This is a rather old interview, but it has some interesting stuff in it that I didn't know... Q&A: Final Fantasy XII developers Art director Hideo Minaba, and character designer Akihiko Yoshida discuss Square Enix's upcoming RPG. TOKYO--The latest issue of Famitsu magazine features an interview with Final Fantasy XII character designer Akihiko Yoshida and art director Hideo Minaba. Yoshida, who worked on Final Fantasy Tactics, and Minaba, a series veteran since 1992's Final Fantasy V, revealed more details about Square Enix's eagerly awaited role-playing game. An English translation of the interview is below: Q: When did the development on FFXII begin? Minaba: Quite some time ago. In the beginning, we started out trying to make a game for PlayOnline, since Matsuno [the director] was involved in that project. It was a really small project, where we were thinking of producing one game in about half a year's time. Yoshida was doing the background artwork and I was doing the character designs for the fun of it. Before we realized it, it was a full-time project. Yoshida: That's kind of how the game began, but it's not really the official beginning of FFXII's development launch. Q: We previously heard from Matsuno that Ashe was modeled on a Frenchwoman's bone structure. Yoshida: The base of her bone structure is a French person's. We were given orders from the start to not make her look like an Asian. But we modified her a bit to look more like a Japanese for the sake of the Japanese audience, and also since a character that looks completely French makes some of the CG expressions difficult. Q: What about Vaan's modeling? Yoshida: Vaal is a Dalmascan in this world. He's something like an Asian. Q: The characters wear skimpy outfits--whose idea was this? Yoshida: That would be me. [Laughs] This country named Dalmasca is supposed to have a hot climate, so we were thinking of showing off more skin. Q: It seems like there will be intense battles between the flying vessels. Minaba: The Dalmascan army and the Empire will fight on their border, which will be the highlight of the opening scene. On the ground, the soldiers will be fighting against soldiers. And in the sky, the flying vessels will be battling against flying vessels. One of the key points [in FFXII] will be about presenting this large number and volume [of characters]. Q: The flying vessels vary in size and design. Will they serve different jobs, such as one being a destroyer and another being a cruiser? Minaba: Yes. And there will be a battle ship that's over 300 meters in the second half of the game. That's still one of the middle-sized ships in this world, though. Q: There seems to be a blue ring on top of the flying vessels. Is this an energy source for the ships? Minaba: The ring itself isn't the energy source. There's something else in the center of it that acts as the energy source. It's a rare material, but there are even more rare materials as well. Q: Would that be a crystal? Minaba: Hmmm, We'll see. Q: In one of the scenes from the trailer, there is a young man who is receiving a sword. The sword appears to be the same design as the one that Ashe is holding, like especially its handle. Minaba: Hmmm, that's a very keen observation. [Laughs] [NOTE: In the trailer shown at the recent FFXII press conference, there is a scene where a young warrior with a short gray hair receives a sword from an old man, with a crowd of spectators gathering and watching. In the same scene, Ashe is smiling and parading in a vehicle through the people with a veil covering her face. The scene is most likely from an early part of the game or the opening scene, before Ashe had to leave her country due to the invasion of the Empire. The official CG portrait of Ashe released by Square Enix also shows that Ashe has rings on each of her fingers.] Q: There is an image where Vaan's status bar is showing off, despite being a field screen. Yoshida: I wonder if we created any battle fields this time? [laughs] Minaba: We hope to show that expression of "volume" that we just talked about. There's a limit due to the polygon count, so it'll be a chance for the developers to show their skill. Q: What is the object that Vaan is holding near his mouth in the image illustration CG? Minaba: That is called a Star Fruit. The city in the background is the Dalmasca Kingdom, where Vaan grew up. Q: The limited edition poster that came with Final Fantasy Tactics Advance featured a Judge. It looks a bit similar to the FFXII logo designed by Yoshitaka Amano. Yoshida: Very keen observation! This poster is actually an image of the "Judge", which governs the power and authority in the world of Ivalice. Q: There seems to be a number of other races aside from humans, in FFXII. Minaba: The races in FFIX were modeled on humans, but the races in FFXII are fundamentally different from humans in their biology. We hope to give different characteristics to different races, like we did in FFTA. Q: Mr. Yoshida designed the Bangaa race for FFTA? Yoshida: I did the original designs for the Bangaas. They were originally created for FFXII, but came out first in FFTA. Q: From checking out the images, there seems to be other races aside from the Bangaa and Viera. Yoshida: There will be other races that did not appear in FFTA. Q: Will Chocobos be used for transportation purposes? Yoshida: They'll probably be around for that kind of purpose. Cool! Edit: Something else I happened upon... F: The game begins with a video of the Mogris (Moogle) parade, right? M: Exactly. You mean the sequence with Ashe and the man with the silver armor? F: This scene is going to delight numerous female fansc M: We actually had planned from the onset to show the love scene at the beginning of the game. (Laughs) F: Ha ha. Therefs definetly something more behind that. The scene with Basch, when does that approximately occur? M: Directly after the opening FMV when you begin a new game. Itfs exactly the scene that was shown at E3. F: In this scene therefs something that interests me. The young knight named Rex/Reks calls out Vaanfs name, right? What does he have to do with him? M: Those who could play it at E3, can probably guess now. Therefs a special bond between Rex/Reks and Vaanc got it? So, the wedding does happen at the beginning of the game. And Rex and Vaan have a special bond? Like, maybe, they are brothers? :o If that is so, then Vaan and Ashe are definitely not siblings. Something weird: This time, the plot revolves around Vaan and Penerrofs/Penelofs story. I thought Ashe was the female lead. ![]() Edit 2: Okay, I looked into the relationship between Vaan and Rex and found this: Character Details Profiles Vaan | View Image Age 17, Vaan is an orphan with dreams of one day becoming a sky pirate. For now, he is a member of The Resistance in the Archadian Occupied Kingdom of Dalmasca. Ashe | View Image Age 19, She is the heir to the throne of Dalmasca, and leader of The Resistance against the Archadian forces. Penelo | View Image Age 16, A skilled Dancer and Singer, an energetic youth who has also lost her family to battle. She is close to Vaan now, and aspires for peace in this war-torn time. Balthier | View Image Age 22, A sky pirate, with allegiance to no country, kingdom, or empire. He roams the skies living the life of freedom Fran | View Image Age ??, Balthier's partner and a member of the Viera race. She is a master of weapons and Balthier's true equal. Basch | View Image Age 36, A Senior Knight of Dalmasca, and perhaps one of the few who know the truth of what happened during the invasion. Since those fateful events, he has been branded a traitor by those he swore to protect. Reks | View Image Age 17*, He is Vaan's elder brother, who two years ago along with Basch witnessed the truth behind the Archadian Invasion. *(Reks is 17 at the time he is shown in the game, which is two years before the main storyline.) Vayne Kaldas Soridor | View Image Age 27, Heir to the Archadian Empire and Leader of The Judges, he still holds a certain care and compassion for the people of Dalmasca. He holds these traits in place of the Arrogance and Ruthlessness found so frequent in other Archadian Officials ¨Character Details Facts & Info Vaan, of course, longs to be a Sky Pirate. He is also a somewhat adept thief as seen in previous trailers. Penelo and Vaan are rumored to be a couple, and are seen in a bit of a quarrel in one of the game's trailers. Penelo has lost most, if not all of her family, in previous wars. While being an astute dancer, she is also skilled in martial arts, taught to her by an elder brother. She makes a living working the Bazaar in Ranbanastre. Balthier and Fran have been partners in the Sky Pirate industry for quite some time. They consider themselves to be equals. While Balthier prefers firearms, Fran is apparently a master of a variety of weaponry. The freedom Balthier and Fran appear to have lead Vaan and Penelo to desire a similar lifestyle. Throughout the game, the two learn that achieving this freedom comes with it's own set of peril and sacrifice, and that true freedom may be harder to achieve than anyone expected. Balthier and Fran are apparently wanted for their acts as sky pirates, and have a lofty sum placed upon their heads. Ashe is the ninth and final child of the King of Dalmasca, with all eight other siblings being boys. All eight of them succumbed to disease and war by the time the King had reached age 49, leaving Ashe as the lone heir to the throne. Ashe has a tendency to keep her true feelings within, choosing instead to face each situation calmly. She is looked upon quite favorably by the people of Dalmasca. As seen in trailers and screens, Ashe is apparently wed to a silver-haired warrior. Whether he has passed on in battle, or if the wedding was interrupted by the Archadian Invasion is currently unknown. Both Basch and Ashe live under the heavy burden of the Kingdom they were once a part of. Ashe being it's only heir, and Basch himself being branded a traitor to a kingdom he once so fiercely defended. Vayne is the son of Gramis, Emperor of Archadia. As such, he is Crown Prince and Heir to the Empire, as well as the appointed leader of The Judges. That said, he is very different from other Archadians. Vayne shows great Care and Compassion for his captives, The People of Dalmasca. So, Vaan and Ashe are not siblings, because Vaan's brother was to be her husband. Penelo is being referred to as Vaan's girlfriend, but this could change during the game. And, although some people are saying that Vaan and Ashe will not be a couple and that it was confirmed by the creators, I couldn't find any such quote. In fact, the closest I could come was this: Final Fantasy XII will not be as heavily driven by a Love Story as more recent entries in the series. *Roots for MainxMain romance*

Oooh! So Ashe and Vaan are sibling-in-laws? Wonder how his brother feels on Vaan wanting to be a pirate (considering he was a knight and all)? Oh, wow! Ashe is becoming one of my favorite RPG heroes just reading this... LOL! XD Looking forward for this game. |

Oh, of course, blame the weather. :rolleyes:All this talk about kingdoms and kings and heirs brings me back to the good ol' days of traditional RPGs! And that's wonderful, as I've had it up to my nose with series dealing with futuristic technology.
Now this is interesting. Let's hope SE keeps to their word. I'm slightly more hopeful than usual, really, seeing as how Yoshida is involved. Character designer he may be, but here's to hoping some of FFT's tragedy rubs off in FFXII! Thanks for the articles, FFG! |

Blah, here's to hoping that Penelo and Vaan are the main couple. XD~ Ionno, Ashe's gorgeous and all but she looks a tad bit similar to Vaan which is kinda creepy. I guess that's from the old days that they were still connected as siblings (and not the big question mark that they are right now). I woulda liked if they had kept the entire Ashe/Vaan sibling angle as that would have been a bit more creative than the usual Squenix relationships. Estranged siblings finally finding one another (and therefore realizing *gasp* they're not alone after all!)... not unexplored but just not explored lately. d: |

Well, did everyone here see the opening FMV that nyrin posted? It was really cool, but did contain spoilers! **SPOILERS** I love being right! Ashe's wedding did take place at the beginning of the game and her husband did die shortly afterward. And, based on the lack of tears at his funeral, I would say that it was an arranged marriage, not one based on love. **/SPOILERS** |

I do hope Vann and Ashe get together! I've read somewhere a while ago that Penelo and Vann were a couple..... blehh! Personally i think Penelo needs her hair re-done. I really don't like her choppy hair. The story is going to be top-notch i can tell! I just hope they don't start a couple argument about who Vann is going to be with....

![]() Nomura: *runs in, flailing* Heavens above! The fans are realising we're squeezing the FFVII LT dry! Yoshida: Let us make haste with a new LT, lest our dawdling allows our marketing department to release the-- gasp!-- actual couple of the game! I'm actually quite hopeful about this game, since it's linked with FFT. And I loved the storyline in FFT to death, so I'm hoping FFXII's storyline lives up to its standard. |
