Books I've recently read: The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants: I thought this would be a shallow chick-lit thing, but it was well written and very touching. I also loved the author's writing style, makes me feel the emotions that all the girls are going through Gathering Blue: It was all right; but not as awesome or staggering as The Giver . I did like the perspective it took on beauty and that world's "artists". Books I'm going to read...as soon as these damn exams are over! Peter Pan in Scarlet aka the official Peter Pan sequel! : Even though I was sorely disappointed by that overrated prequel Peter and the Starcatchers, I was practically salivating over this in the bookstore. I read the jacket and the author actually found a way to bring Wendy and the Lost Boys back to Neverland! Had to buy it, even if it was kind of hard on my wallet. Besides, the editor had this to say about it: [the author]has a unique ability to enter the spirit of an original text, but to bring her own spark of originality and illumination to it, and this wonderful sequel to Peter Pan is no exception to that. Here she takes us to a Neverland that's now a world full of dark uncertainties and mystery, and steers a cliff-hanging course through quicksand, chasms, and high mountains. It's a story that had me utterly hooked from the start, and that can't fail to grip anyone who has ever dreamed of adventure and exploration.' Sounds promising! Please, please don't disappoint me....*prays* Messenger aka the companion novel and conclusion to The Giver and Gathering Blue. Another hike into the world of the utterly depressing...and the utterly inspiring. Yay :) Bartimaeus 1: The Amulet of Samarkand : My little brother just bought this. We'll most probably fight over who gets to read it first. And he'll most probably win, since I have two other books on my 'to read' list  Books I wanna buy: Still Eragon. But I'm afraid I'll be like you, Lynn, and have it in my collection for forever, not finishing it! I have heard the LOTR comparisons and I remember my situation with LOTR- if I hadn't wanted to watch the movie so badly, I would never have finished the books.*sheepish* But man, that Murtagh guy is starting to make the series sound very tempting...(yes, I'm the type to get crushes on book characters XD) Artemis Fowl: The Lost Colony New Arty Fowl book, nuff said. I think the Artemis Fowl series could give Da Vinci Code a run for it's money, in terms of obscure codes and wild, thrilling chases  |

Right now I'm reading A Game of Thrones by George R.R. Martin, part of the ongoing A Song of Ice and Fire series. Very enjoyable fantasy- I love the characterizations and how there are almost no Gary Stus/Mary Sues. There is also no OMGZ!EVALVILLAIN, and some characters are so in shades of gray that it is up to the reader to decide if they are 'good' or 'evil'. Medevial fantasy has been done to death, I know, but this one just HAS to be given a try. The story is told through multiple POVs, but the book is able to pull it of. As an added bonus, magic doesn't seem to play a very big part in the story, so no battles being solved by one jet of light and a spell. ![]() A warning though- the tone is sort of depressing, there are some sex scenes and violent scenes, and the author doesn't hesitate to kill people off at all. |

*hypnotise joo*You must buy it, you must buy it. Whatever it takes, you must buy it... Still eagerly awaiting the third book (with teh green dragon on it). Plus there's an Eragon movie coming out! Just Read Taronga by Victor Kelleher - It's good, though not my most favourite. Post-apocalytic Australia and shows the thought some people often thought bad things happen to the Northern Hemisphere, but still suffered. Didn't know what the Last Days are. Whenever someone talks, it's vague and often interrupted. |

Faerie Wars - Herbie Brennan
My brother and sister read those series. They really like it. One of the books is sitting next to my brother's computer. It looks fun to read, but way too huge. I wouldn't have that much patience to read that book. I don't even have patience to read the current book I'm reading. XD |

How far are you in that book? I'm asking because a few weeks ago, I was going to start on it...but decided on something else. Yes, I've heard a lot of good things about that series, so I picked up "A Game of Thrones" at the bookstore just pretty recently. I was just about to ask you if you liked the main hero or if you found him boring. I'm so used to books where you have a main hero and/or heroine and a main villain, so this should be quite interesting. |

I just finished Peter Pan in Scarlet and....oh. my. :o Now THIS is the Peter Pan I know, THIS is the Neverland I know. I can't believe that after nearly a century, Geraldine McCaughrean managed to seamlessly fit in a wonderfully in-character, and just-as-gorgeously-written classic as this. *worships McCaughrean* I LOVED how she brought back the original characters that we thought we were never gonna see again- grown-up Wendy and the Lost Boys(aka Old Boys), and *cough* certain pirates, but most importantly, good old arrogant, cocky, irresistible Peter. I LOVE how this story ain't cutesy and Disney-fied(*cough Peter and the Starcatchers coughcough*) but like the original, is wildly imaginative, with that all-important dash of darkness. :) I think somewhere, JM Barrie's ghost is smiling Okay, I'm an obsessed fan XD But I think that's a dream come true for *any* fan: when the sequel to their fave book is done right...by someone who's not the original author. It's kind of like reading a very, very, very good fanfic...even better, since this is the "official" sequel.

I just finished Howl's Moving Castle. I gotta say, it's so much different from the movie! Howl's a real ass LOL, especially to poor old Sophie, who stays old up until the very VERY end of the book. Things are so weird...with Calcifer, Markl (Michael, 15) and Sophie has 2 other sisters! :o I'm so glad I picked up the book though...great read! Next time I get to a book store I'm buying the sequel. |

::froths at the mouth at all the Eragon-the Inheritance Trilogy talk that she missed:: ZOOOOOOOOOMG. I'm getting Eldest in a few days (hopefully by tomorrow) and I'm so freaking excited. WAH! SPAZZOMGSPAAAZZ!!!!!111```~ I loved the first book, although yeah, it kinda seemed LOTR-ish, with the classic elves, dwarves, evil ruler, and the hero going through a toughity-tough journey to come to another toughity-tough journey. xD I hope Eldest will be a little better. And Lynn, Arya bothers me too. The elves are all just canon!Sue/Stus, if they're all like Arya. xD SUE/STU ARMEH! :o Oh! How did you guys know that Murtagh Spoiler: click to toggle |

I've finished it, and I'm hunting down a copy of the second book in the series, A Clash of Kings. I am still highly recommending it! If what you're reading right now is boring, give it a try. But if you like your present book, read Game of Thrones as soon as you finish it. ![]() About heroes and villains: most of the book's POVs feature people from two Houses, House Stark and House Lannister. Some people classify House Stark as the 'good' House and the Lannisters as 'evil', but there are some characters from both houses that defy the label (or make things seriously unclear). You have Tyrion Lannister, the Imp, who seems to show some compassion for people from other houses (although he has a reputation for an insulting tongue), and Sansa Stark, who is painfully naive to the point where... argh, can't go on without posting a spoiler. ![]() Of course, there is also a major character from a fallen House who adds to the general confusion, Daenerys Targaryen, and I can't really tell if she's 'good' or 'evil', as she starts out as a young girl being forced to marry a ruthless barbarian lord. As of the end of the book, she has the potential to swing either way. You also have the matter of the king, Robert Baratheon, a war hero in his youth, now an ineffectual leader who drinks and has many outside kids. He's no good and he knows it. Good or Evil? With some characters it's too close to call. But of course there are the archetypal good and bad guys! The goodies who do the 'honorable' thing and behave like the 'normal' fantasy hero would be Eddard Stark, head of House Stark, and his illegitimate child Jon Snow. On the other end of the spectrum are the 'baddies' Tywin Lannister, head of House Lannister, and his children Queen Cersei Lannister and Jaime Lannister. Of course they're evil, beautiful, rich (not that the Starks aren't), and very wily. Out of all of them, I like Eddard the most. Jon strikes me as too fantasy heroish, but tolerable. Tyrion is my favorite Lannister, though as a supporting cast, the rest aren't too bad. Again, the book has multiple POVs, so you aren't stuck with just Jon's or Eddard's story or point of view on things. You also get Eddard's wife's POV, some of his other sons and daughters, and of course Daenerys and Tyrion. So even though some fantasy archetypes do exist, I say that the range of characters in itself far makes up for them. Sorry for the long ramble. I know I made little sense, if at all.

My beloved Deltora Quest, how I love thee.*hugs her 8-in-1 book edition*Emily Rodda, your fan is hoping the studio making the Deltora Quest anime you agreed to really did stay true to the books, aside from Lief's sudden blond hair. I love how the series shows in the beginning that how people in power didn't know their people, which is crucial to their prosperity and the ingeniuity of many plans, whether they're the Shadow Lord's or even the actual hiding place of King Endon and Queen Sharn. Plus the puzzles and riddles are good, yesh indeedz. Bloodbath: Okay, now I'm not sure about the movie. They released the movie edition book, the original Eragon book but with movie screenshots. I like how Saphira looks and even Angela's actor! But the movie seems to be pushing for Eragon/Arya. With make real sense since...
But on a side note, I like Roran/Katrina and maybe Murtagh/Nasuada.*REALLY adores Roran because of Eldest* (Maybe we should have an Inheritance Trilogy thread?) |

Messenger A mixed reaction. Darn you, Lois Lowry for inflicting such horrible things on Jonas, Kira, and Matty! I was a bit disappointed by this book; it started out good but the ending left me SO SAD and wanting more!I still loved The Giver best of all Howl’s Moving Castle I had such fun reading this! So much, that after finishing it, I wanted to start it over again, just to see all the clues I missed. What clues, you ask? Well the plot is pretty twisty, so many loose ends that when they’re all tied up, you go “Durrrr?”. That’s what I did anyway :lol:But I like the book and the film equally(that’s quite a rare thing for me to say); the book because of the more complex plot, and the film because of focus on the love story. ...Eragon looks quite good in the movie but Murtagh looks...meh. Well, I hope he can act at least. *hasn't even read Inheritance but soon will* |

Yeah. Maybe we should just have a seperate Inheritance Trilogy thread. ::will go to make it now:: So far, the most disappointing book I've read (I just finished it) is The Warrior Heir. Sad. It had potential, but even my mom found it just too predictable. And the ending is so cliched. Eeep. Just where's her editor? o_O And I'm reading Speak by Louise Halse Anderson. Woah. I love her strange writing style, and how depressed the settings are. Kinda like your typical outcast-looking-in book, but it's rather dark compared to the other stuff I've read. |

Especially when they totally ruin my expectations of the book, like when the characters are casted so differently from what I expected. Then again, I have really high expectations.
