Books I am interested in: The Inheritance Trilogy, by Christopher Paolini, but I can never find the first book at the store! And I don't want to start a trilogy in the middle! It's too much like walking into a movie theater and "starting" the movie at the middle, then "ending" it at the beginning. That's exactly what happened when I read Narnia for the first time. The Bartimaeus Trilogy by Jonathan Stroud. I don't have much of an Idea what it's about but it's very highly recommended by some friends of mine. Unfortunately, I have the same problem with it that I have with the Inheritance Trilogy The Pendragon Series by DJ McHale- again, same problem, I can't find the first book, and I want to start the series with it! Howl's Moving Castle by Dianna Wynne-Jones: I can't find the book. Period. Am obsessively combing bookstores for it. Right now I'm reading The Diary of Anne Frank which I've read many times before. I still get shivers whenever I think that this was a real girl, who really got killed in the Holocaust. Everytime she speaks of "when the war is over", I get choked up , because from the start I knew she and her family were doomed. In one of her last diary entries, she says "Now I'm getting really hopeful, things are going to work out just fine" This book is proof that bad things do happen to good people. |

I thought I'd deliver this message to my fellow bookworms: HOLY CRAP. I'VE FINALLY FINISHED THE BROTHERS KARAMZOV. It only took me ... 6 months of slowly trudging through 1,000+ pages of 19th century Russian writing. :o |

19th century style! Oh yeah! lol. Happy that you finished? Anyways, I'm reading Valiant: A Modern Tale of Faerie As boring as it sounds, it's really good. It's given my ideas of my own for my own story and possibly, one to come ^^ |

Yes, yes, I'm very happy that I finished it. But that's not to say that I didn't love the book because I did. It was one of my favorites ever even when I was only about half way through it. It just took me so damn long to read the entire thing. Oh, and at the top of my "to read" list now is 1984 if anyone's interested. |

Oh wow, how was it? I think that's the one book of 19th Century Russian Literature that I haven't read and that I still want to read. [I was an absolute nut in 7th-8th grade.]
Oh, if you've never read this before, by all means do! I absolutely adore this book, it's one of my favorites! This applies to '1984' too, although they're radically different. I'm currently (re-)reading The Scarlet Letter for my English class. It's not a terrible book, but I've never really been fond of it. I've always found myself sympathizing with Roger Chillingworth and I couldn't stand Dimmesdale. However, this readthrough may change my mind. |

I'm such a bookworm, I'm so compelled to post.... I've recently become interested in vampire lore, and I just finished Bram Stoker's Dracula and Elizabeth Kostova's The Historian (which took me forever to read, but I enjoyed it). Right now I'm finishing up Anne Rice's The Vampire Lestat and I think Anne Rice is my new favorite author. Her style of writing is absolutely beautiful. And the best thing is, although there's an order to The Vampire Chronicles, you don't have to read them in order. Each book is so informative yet it doesn't spoil the endings to the previous books. This is good because I have a hard time buying each one in order; sometimes they're not in stock. I love fairy tales. I know it's not so good to read so many at the same time, but I have so many books I want to read and I can't choose just one ^^; I started reading some of these books, on and off: Mirror Mirror by Gregory Maguire The Chronicles of Oz by L.F. Baum Confessions of an Ugly Stepsister by Gregory Maguire Son of a Witch by Gregory Maguire The Vampire Armand by Anne Rice Alice's Adventures in Wonderland and Through the Looking Glass by Lewis Carroll Gregory Maguire was the one who wrote Wicked, which was what the musical Wicked was based on. He's a great author for those of you who saw the show and want to try reading the book. Son of a Witch is the sequel to Wicked. I love Harry Potter....I can't wait until the last book comes out!!! When is it supposed to come out?
I have to read that for school now too *sulk* I completely agree with your view of Arthur Dimmesdale, MT... I can't stand him; he's such a pansy. In my opinion he's only worried about his own reputation....had he truly loved Hester he'd do the right thing and be there for her and his own daughter!! *grrr* |

Oh woe, I've had to abandon my books since starting classes. :'( I was well on my way through most of the story books I'd lugged to uni to pass the time-- then term finally started and I haven't touched them since! Books I plan to read when I have the time: Lord of the Rings I've had this damned collection for a gazillion years... AGES before the first movie came out... and I still haven't finished it! >.< I was halfway through the second book when classes started, and I intend to pick up from there once finals are over. In some ways, I'm glad I watched the movie first since the images really help me in visualising the surroundings in the book. I pity Tolkien; he dedicates hundreds of paragraphs to describing the layout and landscape, but none of it registers in my head. I know too little of geography to grasp his descriptions. Eldest by C. Paolini I picked up Eragon after reading someone's recommendation here (I think it was ER's?). It turned out to be a good read, if very LOTR-ish, with the Gandalf-figure and everything. Still, I enjoyed the first book and finished it well before I thought I would. The wait to get Eldest felt like forever, but I finally got it and can't wait to read it when classes finish! I already have a little peeve at the female Elf that was introduced to the end of Eragon. Forgot her name, but she's setting off loads of canon!Sue alarms in my head... Yeah yeah, okay, I won't jump to conclusions before finishing the trilogy. Blood Red, Snow White Or something like that. It's this awesome collection in my uni library of fairy tales retold in a modern light. I found it while searching for anything related to Neil Gaiman, and he actually contributed a short story to this collection! Definitely aiming to pick it up during the lull between the end of my exams and when I go back to Malaysia. I love fairy tales retold with a twist. ![]() Books I'm reading for E Lit class: Hard Times, Prime of Miss Jean Brodie, Waiting for Godot and The Tempest. Finished the first three, going to start on the fourth. Among the three, I think Godot is perhaps my favourite right now. There's something so damned sad about the whole thing, I definitely find it more tragic than comedic. The use of comedy here, in fact, is interesting in how it dulls the sharp sadness of the whole situation. Sometimes the only way to approach something sad is by making it funny; otherwise we'd never be able to handle it. Speaking of Lewis Carroll, I have my eyes and ears tuned to news of Phantasmagoria and the movie adaptation of American McGee's Alice. They'll probably be creepy as hell, but Carroll co-rules my existence (he time shares the throne with Gaiman) and insists I must go watch!Oh, and as always, I keep eyeing the Sandman series by Neil Gaiman and illustrated by Dave McKean. But... GAH. So expensive. @_@ |

Bwahahaha, surrender to the awesomeness of Inheritance Trilogy, Lynn. It's in your wyrd, WYRD! Okay, I'm done with that. Anyway... I get what you mean by the vibes, which bring some thoughts.
But I still adore Eragon and Murtagh. ![]() EDIT: Oh and the elf's name is Arya. |
