Right now I'm reading Alice's Adventure in Wonderland by Lewis Carroll, Through the Looking Glass by Lewis Carroll, and The Lovely Bones by Alice Sebold. All of these books are really wonderful and extremely imaginative. :) |

That's funny... those are the books I have borrowed at the library  (except Through the Looking Glass). I read Alice's Adventure in Wonderland and I love the way it is written (it was a bilingual book, so it was also interesting to see how it was translated in french). I didn't read The Lovely Bones yet (I still saw the movie). Also, I read The Phantom of the Opera by Leroux (fantastic read... seriously, I LOVE this story... in every form... except maybe the sexed up movie and the awful sequel). I hate the fact that Weber wrote the Persian out of the story in the musical... because the Persian is one of the best character of the novel (he's full of win, yeah)... and the only "friend" of the Phantom. I read Childhood's End by Arthur C.Clarke. At first just because I knew Krelian (actually Karellen in the original version... Krelian was a mistranslation) from Xenogears was based on the Karellen of this book. But I don't think the characters are totally alike. The Karellen from the book was IMO
... way more, well... good guy who only does his job to help humanity. The Karellen from Xenogears however... Let's say he's way more complex and almost a Faustian figure (I'm not convinced he did what he did just for humanity's sake, but for one person in particular)... and I think he's a character who could easily be misunderstood. Some think he's emotionless while the character is passionate at his core and was very violent/scary at the very beginning, not to mention the love he had for a woman started his greatest plan. But this is a timeline the game doesn't show us much if at all. Later (which means the events we play... 500 years later), he indeed seems emotionless... but that's what some people generally remember about Krelian... and that's a shame because it's just a mask the character wears to hide his true feelings.
I read Memoirs of a Geisha too. What a read ! The book managed to make me cry at some part (that's the first time I actually cried reading a book, honest)... and made me uncomfortable at other (geishas weren't exactly prostitutes... but still... almost... I felt bad for the characters). Something disturbing : the main character's name is Chiyo and the only Chiyo I know is that little girl from Azumanga Daioh. So, I kinda imagined Chiyo from Azumanga at her place (when you think about it, Chiyo from Azumanga get abused too, poor cute thing) Now, I'm reading Dune... Actually, I try to read the entire series (I just borrowed the 2 first books). This seems to be a big thing... kinda like Lord of the Ring. I kinda like Dune, very sandy... with special kids who grow up too fast (Paul's sister, 2 years old and she's already a grown up in her head... it makes sense according to the story... but it just feel weird imagining it). Then, I have to read 2 other Fondation books by Asimov (I own the first one *given by my aunt*, but since it's a series... I wanted to read the rest). And of course, The Lovely Bones. Yeah, I recently decided to make trips to the library (after realizing that I seriously needed to read more books *I was a serial reader when I was younger... I guess it is coming back to me*... and all my unread books at home kinda bored me... and I can't reread Harry Potter forever lol). |

Oh MAN I loved Childhood's End ![]() As for your question about Karellen and Krelian...
I think the idea was that both Karellen and Krelian attempt to "guide" humanity into a new age as they ascend to a different plane of existence... only the former is a truly despicable inverse mirror image of the other. Karellen has no control over the events, and is simply trying to keep humanity safe during their evolution. OTOH, Krelian has ABSOLUTE control over the events in the game, and tries to force horrific changes to the human race down their throats. And they're further mirrored visually... Karellen looks like a literal demon, yet actually has nothing but compassion for the human race, and his efforts lead to peace and prosperity for a time. OTOH, Krelian looks like a wise, scholarly leader, but is instead a cruel, emotionless, genocidal tyrant who causes the worst disaster in the history of Xenogears' planet.
Randomly, Childhood's End was also a huge influence on the anime Neon Genesis Evangelion as well. And Xenosaga had some elements of 2001: A Space Odyssey in it, another book Arthur C. Clarke wrote (though the Nietzsche references sorta drown the Clarke ones out...). |

*dusts off topic* I need some good fiction recommendations (just general good fiction, not a big genre fan). I'm reading 100 books this year, so I've been going through a lot of stuff and need a long list of titles. I've read 60 so far. Just finished a book about an hour ago so I'm technically not reading anything at the moment, but I'm going to start Florida by Christine Schutt in a few minutes from now while I do my laundry. It's short though, so I should have it finished by tomorrow. |

I just started reading The Marriage Bureau for Rich People by Farahad Zama yesterday. It's about a guy who gets bored being retired so he starts a matchmaking service. I found it at the dollar store, so I was like, "Hey, why not?" I haven't gotten too far into it yet, but it's not bad so far. |

I'm almost finished with the one I wrote about in my last post. It wasn't bad, but it wasn't superb. I wasn't disappointed with it, but I wouldn't put it on my most favorite books list either. |

The last one I read was Chalice by Robin McKinley. I liked it a lot. Even though the ending felt a little rushed, the majority of the book was good. I really appreciated that the author took the time to explain why the characters felt and acted the ways they did. Too many books nowadays just say "This happened, and then this other thing happened, the end," without explaining why the characters are doing certain things or where their motivations come from. So yes, I would recommend this book. |
