One of my favorite YA novels of all time seems to be out of print and hard to find, but for me, its really worth it. It's called Two are Better than One by Carol Ryrie Brink, her Caddie Woodlawn books are better known. This is old-fashioned slice-of-life, think 1930s suburbia, but it is just one really enjoyable tale of growing up and 'maturing'. Who of us here hasn't gone through that stage? Bah, my summary makes it sound really corny, but its still good for me after all these years. Currently reading The Argumentative Indian by Amartya Sen- a bunch of essays on Indian history and culture. Sometimes it feels too much like a book I have to read for school, although I really enjoyed his essay on Rabindranath Tagore. Also re-reading To Kill a Mockingbird. It's great! I wish I had appreciated it better when I was still in highschool. |

Yus, yus, all Clerises should go look for Griffin and Sabine! There are cynical views of the whole story being just one person's schizophrenic invention but we know all about star-crossed romances <3 Thanks for the recs! I haven't seen the book you recommended, mallorn, but I've definitely seen her Caddie Woodlawn books around. I like old-fashioned coming of age books. And Alantie, Sarah Dessen's books sound great! Will definitely get one of them if I ever see them at the bookstore. Only now I don't know which one to buy first because they all sound awesome  are the ones you posted a good place to start? Meanwhile I got one of the Mediator books , only it turned out to be the fifth book in the series, so I'm a bit muddled *goes to look for 'Shadowland'* Oh yeah, would you recommend "All American Girl"? I've put off buying it because in the excerpts I've read, Samantha sounds too much like Mia. Well, I love Mia, but the idea is to read about a different character *g* I'm now reading an genuinely fantastic book called Jonathan Strange and Mr. Norrell by Susannah Clarke. Bought it on a whim; I just could not resist a tagline like: Two magicians shall appear in England. The first shall fear me; the second shall long to behold me... and a comparison to Neil Gaiman, Philip Pullman, and Susan Cooper. *g* I'm glad I didn't because I think this will make my favorite books list! |

The ones I posted are definitely a great place to start. I've read a few others by her and those are by far the best. My personal favorite is Just Listen, but The Truth About Forever is wonderful too. Y'know, I actually did the same thing with the Mediator series! I thought Haunted was the first book, but I was so lost when I started reading it!!! I rather enjoyed All American Girl. Sam's different from Mia in that she's obsessed with art and she has an older and younger siblings, and hates popular clothing styles, though they are sort of similar. I'd say give it a try anyway. :)Ooh, that Jonathan Strange and Mr. Norell sounds really good! *puts on hold immediately* I actually just finished reading Tam Lin by Pamela Dean, Kusari!! <3333 It was so wonderful! I would have been more upset about it taking so long to get to the magical side of things if I hadn't enjoyed the literary discussions and the characters so much. I simply adored it. Now I want a copy of my own!!! D: |

I'm reading The Book of Lost Things by John Conolly for my school's summer reading. I'm almost 100 pages in, and it just started getting good. |

I know-it's like a love letter to literature! And it doesn't hurt that Janet is also a fan of children's books <3 I actually expected the Classics majors to be a student's cult or something- not the big supernatural twist that occurred. I was also thinking that the ghost would turn out to be just a disturbed dormer. And from Thomas's first appearance, I wanted him to get together with Janet so I was very impatient all the time she was with Nick. But despite the time it took, I still completely enjoyed the ride :) I’ve heard “Jonathan Strange and Mr. Norrell” compared to Dickens and Austen in terms of writing style and English wit. I’ve never read either of them so I wouldn’t know ( *hides from classics buffs*) All I know is, I can’t remember the last time I enjoyed an 800+ page book so |

It really was, and I adored that quality to the book. <3 I was also very impatient for Thomas and Janet to get together- her and Nick just bugged me, so I was always on the edge waiting for them to let go of their pride and just get together. I just finished reading Lock and Key by Sarah Dessen! Not quite as good as Just Listen and The Truth About Forever, but it was alright. I liked some of the elements in the story, such as Ruby working at the jewelry counter and her rekindling relationship with her sister Cora, but I wish that Sarah had focused more on the important things instead of things that were meaningless to the plot. Ruby's ex group of friends could have been handled better I felt, but ah, I'm not the author! |

I'm reading my first Harlequin (sp?) and it's better than I thought. Darkest Night from Gena Showalter, but I've been all over the place. I read The Alchemyst and The Magician from Michael Scott and Cirque Du Freak and Cirque Du Freak: Vampires Assisstant from Darren Shan. I suggest reading anything from Michael Scott. I've read his others and they are all well written. Darren Shan (at least this series) seems more like it would fit in with 14-15 year olds and I'm 19, but it's still good. Not as much as Michael Scott, but still good. |

Wtf. That's coming out next month? And I thought it was going to be called "Empire"? I'm reading I Am America (And So Can You!) by Stephen Colbert. EPIC WIN. |

From what I've heard, the Trilogy has turned into a Quartet, I believe, so Brisinger is going to be the third. I'm not sure if there's a title for the fourth book, but it's possible it's Empire. *shrugs* I've never really gotten into those books, unfortunately. The second one in particular was irritating- I hated the jumping to differerent POVs when in the first book it was just Eragon's. But Murtagh is <3. Too bad he was so shafted in the movie. <_< I've just finished reading A Swiftly Tilting Planet. Charles Wallace = <33333. And I'm trying to read Wildwood Dancing, but compared to the author's other works, it's really not grabbing my attention, sadly. |

Oh, that's right--it was split into four books. I forgot, lulz. I just thought they were all going to have six letters and start with e to keep the theme running. If no one minds me asking, why does everyone think Murtagh is so awesome? Don't get me wrong, I really like him, but he never once struck me as a totally ~awesome~ character like some people say. Maybe that's because I felt most of the characters in the books were pretty bland, but whatever. It has been a while since I read the books. And I'll admit that I am an Inheritance fan. I remember reading those books when they first came out, and they're the only real ~fantasy~ books that I can re-read without getting tired of. And the movie sucked, IMO. It was so awful I regret ever going to see it. |
