Just look for the name AnakinSolo on Shelfari Artemis Fowl! I adored 'The Eternity Cube'; especially the part where they fake the thumbprint. It was so unexpected, I just kept thinking, "Artemis, are you NUTS???" And I remember that my favorite story in 'The Joy Luck Club' was the girl who fell overboard the raft when her family was celebrating the Moon Festival.
Well, the Scottish ballad is about a young woman named Janet who goes to rescue her lover, Tam Lin, from the clutches of the faerie folk. Every seven years, the faeries sacrifice a young man to Hell, and the Queen of the Faeries has captured Tam Lin to sacrifice him on Halloween night. I think the most recent retelling is Tithe, by Holly Black, but I've never tried that! Anyways, in this version, Janet is a college freshman, studying English literature at the liberal arts college of Blackstock. She and her roommates Tina and Molly become friends with the peculiar, artsy young men from the Classics department. She soon realizes that there's something very strange about that particular department and thinks it's somehow linked to the “hauntings” that are going on in their dorm.(Books getting thrown out of windows and a dormmate who claims to have met a ghostly girl face to face). The Classics majors seem to have tendency to conduct weird midnight meetings and play bagpipes in the middle of the night, and march around wearing unearthly clothes on Halloween night. And the boy she dates, Nick, is caught right in the middle of it, much to her apprehension And even though Nick's her boyfriend, she's also strangely drawn to one of his friends, the quiet, brooding Thomas Lane(aka Tam Lin) who warns her against getting too close to the “cult” and to Nick- “you're either one of them or you're not”. It's a cult classic and now I can see why; I'm completely enjoying it! |

Yay~ ![]() I'm reading the Bartimaeus Trilogy (first book!) by Jonathan Stroud, and it's really well-written; I've reread the first book three times already. It's just killing me that I can't find the second book in the closest bookstore. ![]() @Kusari Yarou: Tithe's a bit different in that the girl's the one who's going to be sacrificed, and the guy saves her---but it's still basically the same thing. XD It's modern dark. I think I should give that book a try. (Tam Lin?) I like faerie tales. 8D
I find that the Eternity Cube is the second most intelligent (using Artemis' brain, I mean) book in the series---second only to the first book. (Haha.) I like the first book best though, because it's pure and simple and Artemis is evil. |

Oh, I need the 5th Artemis Fowl book. Arty, how I've missed you so. My favorite was the Eternity Cube too, so sad at the end. I am re-reading The Subtle Knife in the His Dark Materials trilogy. |

Yay!! *sends you a friend request* Oh, I agree! Eternity Code is definitely the best! And that part with the thumb made me freak out too! It was smart, yes, but oh so wrong! I like the Opal Deception too. I have to read the Lost Colony though- I hadn't realized that another had been released in the series! I love the characters though- there's no sugar coating with them, they are what they are. And surprisingly, I love Juliet. She's usually not the type of character I like, but for some reason I made an exception in her case.
That one's my favorite too!!! *bonds* I actually read that one when I was young because it was made into a picture book <3. So beautiful! I love the whole idea behind the Moon Woman and the secret wish. Very awesome. Hmm, thank you for the summery! I think I am definitely going to give that a try!
I actually tried to read that book, but I stopped after awhile because I got sick of the constant foul language and it just wasn't clicking with me. I mean, an occasional swear doesn't bother me, but when it's an endless stream it just comes off as unintelligent. *shrugs* My take though. Maybe it got better later on in the book, so don't take my word for it. |

Gah, Eternity Code. *facepalms* Can't believe I forgot the title...i's a sign that I should go buy my own copies  But my very favorite part was "I am Artemis the Hunter". I always wondered about his name, and then he delivered it so awesomely *g*
I didn't really find it sad because I had complete confidence that Arty would find a loophole and weasel through, like he always does. personally thought it ended on an upnote, when they found the, uh, memory shield-things(forgot their names!) that Artemis set up.
Oh I see. I just looked it up and it's not really a retelling of the ballad after all; it just borrows some elements. |

I'm not daydreamer.
I was sad, because when Foaly is finding everything, Arty feels sad too. Then I thought he must find a loophole, because he's Artemis. And wasn't they wearing contact lenses, so the Mesmer didn't work.
I always thought why he was named after a Greek Goddess (I read the books out of order, I blame my school libary.) Then he said that, and it all clicked. |

Ack, sorry I'llwaitforever! I'm getting notorious for mixing people up when I quote  Along with Tam Lin, I'm re-reading Pamela Dean's second book from her Secret Country trilogy, The Hidden Land. It's kind of like...Narnia with Shakespeare homages

O_O That sounds awesome. . . . Guh, I just finished reading The Lost Colony and I wasn't impressed. Some things were interesting, but the overall story just was not appealing to me. Plus I felt there were too many new characters introduced, and the old ones were sort of shoved into the background. *sighs*

Oh yeah. I was really disappointed too. I really don't like the new character, the other genius (forgot her name). She didn't have to completely overthrow Artemis, but she could've pulled her own weight. -_- Her "weaker" moments outweighed her "cool" moments. The only part I liked was Billy Kong's (...that's his name right?) story 'cause it was creepy/cool.

Try Susan Cooper's The Dark is Rising sequence. (After reading it, I swore to myself that I'd recommend it to anyone who asked for a good read  ) Plot and writing and mythology are stellar...characters are LOVE. |

*seconds the nomination* The Dark is Rising is seriously awesome, Sefie. I recommended it to Kusari, and she's become a devoted fan. Aurthurian myth! Umm, you might also enjoy Artemis Fowl- boy genius/criminal mastermind gets himself involved in the secret fairyworld. Lots of technology combined with magic and adventure and a bit of crime. ![]() Also, if you like mythology/magic mixed with historicalish stuff, I highly recomment the Sevenwaters Trilogy by Juliet Marillier. Daughter of the Forest, Son of the Shadows, and Child of the Prophecy. They are some of my most favorite books ever. It's about a family legacy in old Ireland. <3 The heroines are incredible, and the stories deeply touching. The author has also written a two book series called Wolfskin and Foxmask about Vikings (I personally didn't like these as much, but others do), and a current series in the works, the Bridei cronicles: The Dark Mirror, Blade of Fortiu, and the Well of Shades, with hopefully more to come! I believe it's the Pict culture- lots of magic and history mixed. If you want something a bit darker magic, the Abhorsen Trilogy by Garth Nix is fabulous- Sabriel, Lirael, and Abhorsen. Very excellent! The Old Kingdom on the otherside of the wall is a land of magic where evil necromancers bring the dead back to work their bidding. It's up to the Abhorsen to fight them and put the dead back to rest. I hope these help! <3 |

Ugh, what am I reading at the moment? ... Oh yeah, I'm trying to read "The Perfect Storm" by Sebastian Junger for the second time. It's really slow, but I'm not that far. I dunno if I'll keep reading it. D: I love to read, it's probably one of my favorite hobbies, but I haven't found a good book in a while. D: |
