I'm reading The Moonstone by Wilkie Collins for my degree. T.S Eliot called it 'the first and greatest of English detective novels', and I can understand why, the story captures your imagination and you get absorbed into it really quickly. It's about a yellow diamond that was watched over by three Hindu priests for centuries, before it was taken by a soldier during lootings at the city of Somnauth. It ends up the inheritance of a heiress named Rachel, and is stolen from her bedroom, which is where the story gets going. I'm really enjoying it so far. |

I do need to reread that, but... I'm reading Eragon by Christopher Paolini. I'm only a few chapters into it but I'm quite enjoying it so far. Seems to be the kind of book I'll enjoy. |

Heheh, another Eragon reader! Enjoy, Scott, enjoy the first book as much as you can! Before you move onto the sequel, Eldest... Just finished reading Taming the Shrew in English; it's an old play, but I couldn't help but think it gives me that old-fashioned theatric feeling. |

I'm reading three books all at once because it's sweeeet summer and I can! *sticks tongue out at school* The Secret Country by Pamela Dean- of the HP fandom Cassandra Claire plagiarizing fame. 5 cousins who have a fantasy roleplaying game actually find themselves living a story that won't bend their way. It's just great! The Sisterhood of the Travelling Pants by Ann Brashares- really, this is so much deeper than all those other shallow chick-lit flurff. It has meaning. Peter Pan in Scarlet by Geraldine McCaughrean- now there've been past pastiches of Peter Pan, but this one is my personal fave. Closest that's ever come to Mr. Barries elegant storytelling. |

Byzantium: The Decline and Fall by John Julius Norwich Historical summary of the Byzantine Empire's final four centuries, 1071 - 1453, following the devastating battle of Manzikert. Norwich is probably my favorite Byzantine historian, his works aren't just facts and figures, but are laid out almost as prose. |

Wow I haven't updated on what books I'm reading in the longest time! Well, I've finished a lot of books lately. Love in the Time of Cholera by Gabriel García Márquez, Gone with the Wind by Margaret Mitchell, Slaughterhouse-Five by Kurt Vonnegut, The Tattooed Soldier by Héctor Tobar, and so on. Those of you who have seen my reading lists before know that I read a lot of books at once. Right now, I'm in the middle of Anna Karenina by Leo Tolstoy, I've started The Alchemist by Paulo Coelho, I'm halfway through The Grapes of Wrath by John Steinbeck, and I'm halfway through The Stand by Stephen King. I'm re-reading Watership Down by Richard Adams, The Bluest Eye by Toni Morrison, and The Great Gatspy by F. Scott Fitzgerald, all because they relate in some way to the book I'm writing.

Hey Saddie, if you like The Great Gatsby, it might be worth getting Haruki Murakami's Norwegian Wood. Some readers say that it's similar, but since I haven't read Gatsby, I can't comment. I can tell you that Norwegian Wood is a breathtakingly good read, though.

I've just finished Something Wicked This Way Comes by Ray Bradbury. Two boys encounter a travelling carnival that steals people's souls...creeped the hell out of me. ![]() I'm now reading Tam Lin by Pamela Dean. It's a novel that "plot combines the story of a young woman's life at college with a retelling of the traditional Scottish fairy ballad Tam Lin." Truthfully, I'm enjoying it more for the college academia themes than the fairy allegory  BTW, does anybody here have a Shelfari? I'm getting a kick out of the virtual shelves, and seeing all myu favorite things in a row. Interesting...my book tags say I'm mostly immersed in:
The "contemporary fantasy" tag is dwarfing the others too  |

I've never seen that site before, but it looks awesome!!! *goes to sign up* How can I find you on there, Kusari? I'm now rereading the Artemis Fowl series, and I borrowed the Joy Luck Club from the library to read again. Hooray!
*interest is caught* Tell me more! I love modern fairy tale things, if they are done well! |
