Hey, sign me up! Nanaki's so intelligent and yeah, cute :P I loved his sidestory in Cosmo Canyon...how he hated his father and then gained newfound respect for him. I really like that scene where he howled at the moon, beside his father's arrow-riddled stone body. Also, he howled morosely at Aerith's death, which makes me love him more :D

I loved his side story, too!

Question: Did other people here think that Seto cried? I got in a big dispute with someone over that one time. I said that Seto cried, and someone started arguing that it was just a drop of the Lifestream that fell instead of a tear.

It all revolved around the issue of whether or not Seto was still alive in some form.

And cute fanart, KY! :fangirl:

I think it was a tear too. I think it was to let us wonder if it meant he was alive and there was a way to bring him back. At least that's what it made me wonder, lol.

I think it was a tear too. I think it was to let us wonder if it meant he was alive and there was a way to bring him back. At least that's what it made me wonder, lol.

That's how I saw it, too. And look at the dialogue:

Red XIII "...That... That's.... Seto?"
Bugenhagen "Seto continued to fight the Gi tribe here. ...To the protect this Canyon." "Even after the Gi's poisonous arrows turned his body to stone......" "Even after they all ran away... Seto, continued to protect us." "And he continues to protect us, even now."
Red XIII "Even now..."
(The camera pans back down to Red XIII and the others.)
Bugenhagen "You thought that he was a coward and ran away. But he, alone, risked his life to protect Cosmo Canyon." "That is your father, Seto."
(Red XIII turns to Bugenhagen.)
Red XIII "That..... that is Seto? ...!? Did mother know?"
Bugenhagen "Ho Ho Hoooo... She knew. The two of them made me promise to keep this cave shut." "They asked me to seal it myself and not to tell a soul." "They said we should forget about this cave."

How could Seto continue to protect the canyon unless he was alive in some form? How could Seto and Nanaki's mother make Bugen promise to keep the cave shut unless Seto was conscious?

I always thought it was an interesting example of how the dead can continue existing in some form in the world of FFVII.

The whole dialogue actually leaves it pretty open to that, and it's definately something to consider seriously. It's also pretty emotional to think of Seto not truly dead, because it would have to be pretty terrible to be left there like that, alone, and maybe never able to die. It'd be hard to not know what happened to his son, so imagine how emotional it would be to finally have his son there. Both Seto and Nanaki are too underrated.

I guess I've always seen it as an example of the consciousness of a dead person living on and being able to communicate with the living. Seto is dead - he hasn't been able to eat or drink in many years. He hasn't moved in many years, either. Yet, he is aware of Nanaki being there... so he must be conscious. So even though he's officially dead, Seto lives on in some form.

So if Seto has lived on in some form, why can't Aerith live on in some form?

Well said... that's the way I see it, too. And I agree that both Seto and Nanaki are underrated... I think Bugenhagen is, too!

And welcome to the club, AR! :huggle:

well, isnt seto alive? i mean, i know he got turned into stone and everything, but that was all. its like when someone is frozen. they are still alive, but they cant do anything until someone "wakes them up" by pressing the "off" button. seto is still alive, but he cant move. cuz he cries, doesnt he, when Nanaki howls. i have to say, that bit got me emotional too!

thanks for welcoming me, Anastar. ^_^

I don't see how Seto can be alive. Yes, he was turned to stone and he'll remain in stone until someone pushes the "off" button - like you said. However, how many years has he been in stone? If I remember right, it was said that the war with the Gi tribe happened about 50 years ago or so.

In all that time, Seto hasn't been able to eat or drink. If you haven't been able to eat or drink in 50 years, there's no way you'd still be alive.

Perhaps it's like having your body frozen in time, so it's normal needs don't exist, after all, the bodies never seem to age in that kinda state, so perhaps the body is frozen, and this is letting us know that the mind isn't. It actually makes sense that the body is only frozen, not dead, considering that when the characters are petrified in battle, they must still be connected to the body to be brought back by soft. So I figure they are still alive. But maybe the mind is still aware and knows what's going on. Going on from this train of thought, in games where there is Stop, I think that would stop their body and mind in time, as opposed to petrification stopping their body only.

Just my thoughts, I'm just kinda working it out by writing it down.

But if all characters in your main party get petrified, it's Game Over. If all it took was some Soft to bring Seto back to life, why didn't they do it?

they are arrows from those Gi guys. they turn you into stone. he is mentally aware of his surroundings, like taco said. for example, he can see a little kid climb up onto his back and play horsey, but he cant do anything. a bit like when sephy manipulate's cloud. :o

I'd rather that Seto be dead than alive yet petrified. It's simply horrible to think of someone frozen and still aware of his surroundings.
As for him 'crying', I think that was just Square's way of making the moment more touching than it already was.
If he's alive in some form, though, I woudn't be surprised. Doesn't Cosmo Canyon have mysterious connections with the Planet and the Lifestream?
