I thought it was pretty clear that Cloud was refering to Zack. Anyhow, this is what it says in the Reunion Files: Zack sacrificed his life so that Cloud could live on. That's how Cloud thinks of him, and his line, "I said I'd live out both our lives", is symbolic in that it serves as a motivating force for him to carry on living after Zack's death. |

When Cloud spoke the line, he was directing it at Zach at that point, but that doesn't mean that he doesn't apply it to Aerith too. He can live for both of them, there's nothing to say that he applies that line exclusively to Zach only. I'm sure Cloud also lives on for Aerith as well as Zach. |

I'm sure one could take it that way if they choose to. However, SE only mentioned Zack when referring to that line. I feel that was a special little moment between just Cloud and his friend Zack...but yea, that's my own personal opinion.

Yeah I like Cleris but that doesn't mean that every line concerning Cloud's feelings has to do with her...this line to me was something between Cloud and Zack who also shared a special relationship. Their friendship was highlighted here, which seems obvious to me since a) he's putting up Zack's old buster sword into the ground to mark his burial and b ) this is the site where Zack died. It seems most likely this line has to do with Zack. That doesn't mean that Cloud doesn't think about Aerith during the movie. We can see lots of thoughts like those directed towards her. But it doesn't have to be all about Aerith all the time. But that's just me. |

Couldn't have said it better than myself. I've personally always considered this scene to be Clack. They were close friends and it makes more sense for that line to be directed at Zack. Cloud did take Zack's identity, in a way, he lived through him. The however part could be ... 1} Now that he has rediscovered himself he no longer believes in living out Zack's dream (mercenary, hero) 2} He's willing to fight to the death and give up the life that he had promised he would live out |

Same here. Agreed with your reasons too. But I also feel that making it all about Aerith reduces Cloud's potential as a character. It'd be as much a disservice to him as we always say it is for Tifa, when Tifa is made out to be all about Cloud (man, I hope that sentence made sense >_<). That line makes me wonder: does it show that Cloud has actually accepted and moved past Zack's death? Just curious, because I've seen it being said that Cloud is feeling guilty over both Zack AND Aerith's deaths in AC (I agree that he felt guilty, but what I don't agree with is that they are putting Aerith and Zack on the same level). Could've sworn this idea came up before, maybe in this very thread, but I haven't read the older threads for the longest time. ^^; |

Lynn:
As good a friend as Zack is to him, Cloud was able to accept and move past his death without too much trouble. I've always felt that while Cloud is guilty about Zack's death too, it's definitely not at the same level or even in the same manner he's guilty about Aerith's death. IMO, Cloud seems to act in almost an opposite direction. In Zack's case, it seems to give Cloud motivation to fight on and to live: "I decided to live for your sake." I just don't see that same attitude with Aerith's death. I'm not saying he was thinking suicide, but it affects him in such a way that unlike Zack's death, her death isn't giving him any motivation to fight for his own life. That's how strongly he feels about having failed her. |

Beautiful Paradox

Um...maybe I have thought way too much about this(a shock I know) but I always thought that that showed him honoring Zack. Since Zack appeared to be so full of life and gave his life to protect his friend who at the time was very ill and possibly may have never recovered, I thought that Cloud was trying to learn to love life like Zack did, since Zack was the first one to believe in him. He wanted to but he hadn't completely gotten to that point due to his guilt over Aeris. I think he got over wanting to be Zack but I think he was trying to incorporate some of Zack's strength and attitude towards life. But before that could happen he needed all parts of his past/life to be reconciled before he could truly honor Zack by living life as a whole Cloud. Does that make sense? Or is that what everyone already said... sorry I am very tired today so please be patient with me. Anyway that is my thoughts on the line and his relationship with Zack.
