Yes, Chrissy, my brother promised to come and clear out the end room in the shed and build some nest boxes and a roost for them in there. It should be perfect! I can have a heat lamp in there for them in the worst of the winter. We can cut a small entrance for them in the side, with a ramp they can use to go out in the fenced yard. I may have to clip their wing feathers so they can't fly out. I also didn't mention, but our housecleaning lady and her husband came over today with the rooster she is giving me (he crows all night, they say, and is driving the neighbors crazy). WHAT a beautiful, big bird! He is three times the size of the Banties. I am not going to name him, as he is going into the oven within a few weeks ( or days, if it's true about the crowing.. ) He is red-gold, with dark green tailfeathers. I'll try to post a picture of him tomorrow, when he's calmed down a little. I have him in a very small cage; he has room to move around a little, but not much.In fact, as I think about it, he is so nice, I may call Tim (who gave me the Banties) and see if he wants him. Tim has a big farm with lots of room for a feisty, pretty rooster! It would be such a shame to kill such a beautiful bird!! Andrea, nothing! Linda's husband Dave said, a sparrow hawk will hang around til all the chickens are gone. So the chickies have to lose their freedom. We will miss seeing them walk around the yard!

That's pretty gruesome, Heather (chicken being killed, not eating rooster.) How big is a sparrow hawk? I don't have any idea. Your chickens didn't look teeny tiny when you posted their pix. |

The sparrow hawk looked smaller than the chicken he killed (it was the small female, who was always a step behind everyone else). I'd say the chickens are runnuing aroud three pounds. The hawk couldn't carry the hen away but tried to eat it right there by the house. I wouldn't let him finish his meal....but then, I couldn't butcher the chicken either. I put her into the trash.... |

What are you going to do with all the eggs when they start laying them? If you get a cow that would help keep them warm in the shed.

Only two hens left now, Andrea, and they are Bantams; the eggs are half the size of a normal egg. I think there won't be a problem. Cow? No, thanks!

Cow? As soon as I read that I had a mental image of you leading a cow, with big bell, to breakfast at Deer Run - meeting Ackmal and his furry friend at the corner

I would love to meet Ackmal, but am afraid his fourteen (?) other wives would not approve of me....to say nothing of the camel! Thanks, Jackie. The Way of all Flesh....

LOL! I know who Steve is, but did not have the pleasure of meeting him...maybe this year. I have my reservations, (for three nights this time). |

Well, I'm glad you're home, Karen! Do you know how hard it is to wait up for people in different time zones!!! Hope you're not getting sick. Take Echinacea. Off to bed myself. |
