A man can serve for 8 years yet a single moment, act or phrase often defines him in one's memory. Here's mine

Clinton - I did not have sex with that woman, Ms Lewinsky
G.H.W. - Read my lips
Reagan - Mr. G.. Tear down this wall
Carter- 21 % interest, hostages in Iran
Nixon- Watergate
LBJ- I will not send American boys to do what South Viet Namese boy should do.
FJK- Ask not what your country can do for you but what you can do for you country
DWE- Interstate road system
HST- the buck stops here/ the A-Bomb
FDR- I was too young, really.

It seems that I remember mostly the negative things. I did not add in W because his tenure isn't over, but right now it's him standing atop the rubble in NYC saying that they will hear from us soon.

LBJ- I will not send American boys to do what South Viet Namese boy should do. / "We have the opportunity to move not only toward the rich society and the powerful society, but upward to the Great Society." (lol)
FJK- Ask not what your country can do for you but what you can do for you country (when government became more important than people it served)
DWE- Interstate road system / book burning
HST- the buck stops here/ the A-Bomb
FDR- "New Deal liberalism is plain English for a changed concept of the duty and responsibility of government toward economic life." (Road to Serfdom)

Clinton - "It depends on what the meaning of the word 'is' is"

Clinton - "It depends on how you define "alone" ... there were a lot of times when we were alone, but I never really thought we were."

As I thought more about it I remember FDR's Administration with the V for victory. The victory garden and scrap drives.

Chris, it came down in GHWB Admin I think that was a typo.

Jane, good thinking on Ford. I couldn't remember a thing he did, but he did have 2 left feet.

The symbolic wall? Or Communist USSR?

IMO, another staged event. One of the best.

In GW's case, I would nominate one phrase and one habit.

"It's hard work." Have you ever noticed how often he throws that into his speeches? - and it really doesn't matter what it's about.

The other is his habit of associating everything to 9-11.... the icing on your cake could run, and he'd point that out as a reason "not to forget the events of September 11."

Mur,

Yes noticed about references to 9/11. IMO it's a good thing. in '41 no one needed to remind us of Pearl Harbor. "Remember Pearl Harbor" was a common phrase, before that it was "Remember the Maine", and before that "Remember the Alamo" (if you were a Texan") Today to many people are quick to dismiss this attack and erease it from their memory, and a reminder is in order. We are becoming soft anad too comfortable, and too content. Instead of rallying around to protect our country, too many only want to rally around the first topless bar they find.

I think the defining moment in GWBs Presidency may well be him standing on the flight deck of the USS Abraham Lincoln declaring victory literally years prior to the ending military hostilities in Iraq.

The one thing I think everyone who was an adult during the Nixon Presidency will always remember was the oft repeated statement, "I am not a crook>"
"WE HAVE MET THE ENEMY AND HE IS US." --- Pogo
