"do Not Call List" - Does It Work?

I believe you folks have had Legislation to stop TeleMarketers from calling your home for a few years now. The Parliament up here is considering something similar (although I have not heard details yet). This sounds like very welcome and long-overdue move - if it works!

Does anyone have any personal experience with being on such a list, and how effective it is?

Mur,so far so good, every now and then one sneaks through usually from a bank.
If I'm not mistaken I may have also added our name to a list not to receive telemarketing calls on the cell phones.

The only ones that bother me is he few I deal with. Impolitely I ask them if the call concerns a bill problem. If not get lost.

After getting my free credit reports I also opted out for life from the annoying credit acceptance offers.

The credit card companies are, which I never knew, allowed to check your credit every time they offer you a pre approved card offer. In two months Capital and several others checked my record over a dozen times.

Although it doesn't go on your record as you seeking credit who needs them checking my personal record.

They also have DNC for cellphones which I signed up for.

About six months ago we got on the DNC list. It seems as though we get fewer calls. Our kids and close friends have our cell number so I put our answering machine greeting with two rings as such, Hello, you have reached Bob and Mardel, we are not here right now so please leave a message at the tone or call us on our cell phone.

Of course these idiots are stumped because they do not have our cell number, only family and friends have this. They rarely leave a message!

We hope they never get our cell number because it costs for incoming calls.

Seems to woork fine. Been on it ever since it came out, and on the Texias NCL ever since it did. But I was also persistent with the worst offenders by phone and mail even before since by law they must provide an opt out. I'm guessing we get one unwanted call a month now.

On edit, the phone just rang! :o

I would say it's worked pretty well. We've been on the NY State list and the USA list since their inception. Charities are exempt and some other calls do sneak through, but they are minimal.

Well, surprise, or not. It was someone from the Heritage Alliance calling asking if I would volunteer my time to support an amendment to the Texas Constitution to bar same-sex unions and marriages. Too bad it was a recording.

Need to look up the law on this. I mean, why do these people get to sell their agenda over the phone?

I would say that it is working fantastically here. Perhaps once or twice a year, we get a call from some company which we have not contacted. We then ask if they are aware of us being on the no-call list, they say "no," apologize, and that is the end of it. We have never heard from such callers a second time.

The DNC works well on everything except it doesn't keep the politicians and charities from calling. Damned Govinator keeps calling!

I haven't got on the DNC list yet. But, the last call I recieved asked if he could speak to (my name). I said no. He asked if I was available, I told him that he was forbidden to speak to (my name). He kind of stammered said thank you, and hung up. It was worth a good laugh, and seems to work.

Mur: even though we in Canada don't have legislation, I've still told several companies (usually banks) that I want on their DNC list.
Capital One even sent me a letter stating that I was on it. I gave them my business address and haven't received any junk mail there so I know they didn't sell my address to other companies either.

I always know when its someone trying to sell me something as they ask for "Mrs" (which I'm not) and then proceed to mispronounce my last name. I ask who's speaking and then tell them to put me on their DNC list or if its just for carpet cleaning or such, tell them no one by that name lives there.
