After shutting down Penn station and now this, because of a phone call. When does it end. We put hundreds of police into these things when they are called away from their regular duties. People in the administration hinted that the Penn station alert was not credible. If I were a terrorist I would call in many threats with a location and then do my dirty work somewhere else. Like I said the terrorists have us RUNNIN SCARED! D.C. Police Evacuate Washington Monument Oct 07 3:22 PM US/Eastern WASHINGTON The Washington Monument was evacuated Friday after a bomb threat was called in to local police. U.S. Park Police Sgt. Scott Fear said the call came in at 2:24 p.m. EDT and the monument was evacuated a short time later. Bomb-sniffing dogs were called in and two blocks between Constitution and Independence avenues were closed off. An initial search turned up nothing worrisome. A law enforcement official, who spoke on condition of anonymity because other agencies were handling the case, said the credibility of the threat was low but officials did not want to take any chances. The Washington Monument, which was built in the 1800s and dedicated on Feb. 21, 1885, rises 555 feet over the National Mall. It reopened to the public last spring after undergoing a seven-month, $15 million security overhaul that included vehicle barriers and a new lighting system. |

Chris: Both of our countries are so porous we are sitting ducks for any type of scare tactics. One just has to hope that after many false alarms we don't become so complacent that we get caught again. No amount of military tactics in the muslim world is going to stop religious fanatics from doing what they believe is right, we have to get to the clerics and make them change their onslaught. |

You are going to have to chose between freedom and safety, GWB wants you to chose safety under the protection of big government. GWB wins, the terrorists win and only you lose. Panic, run in circles, scream and wail, just what both groups want. People are to stupid and afraid to be free I guess. |

"chose between freedom and safety" There was a time in this nation people said "Give me Liberty or give me death!" Are we losing that anyhow? |

Terrorism is the best hammer the demagogues have ever had to beat the American people in to line! We've become a nation of wussies, protect me but don't let me be scared! |

Ya know Corky, I have hesitated to wade into this, for fear of angering or hurting the feelings of people I LIKE. But I have to comment that from up here, it appears that a significant portion (but certainly not ALL!) of the American people truly ARE frightened and paranoid - it is what I imagine the 50's "Commie Scare" must have been like (I was too young to take it all in). And it's not just "Terrorism", it's many things. IMAGINE! A country in which I see people wetting their pants that their state has made it legal to carry a hand-gun UNDER YOUR JACKET, IN PUBLIC!. And they truly are creaming their Jeans, now that a few states are passing "Shoot First - Ask Questions Later!" legislation! Do they know what KIND of society they are celebrating? THIS is "The Greatest Country in the World??? WHAT THE HELL???

Actually, I am fairly certain that there are certain "Powers-That-Be", for whom this plays right into their hand. In fact, I believe they do their level best to CULTIVATE it. I have never once - Not ONCE - looked at the guy next to me at a red light, and thought "I wonder if he has a gun in his glovebox?" Not up here, at least.... |

Now Corky, I could do an amateur Freudian analysis of that statement, but I will save you the embarrassment.

Mur, I think you're right...on the "the American people truly ARE frightened and paranoid ". If some find that offensive, well, perhaps it will wake them up. Perhaps it is a universal truth that the loss of liberty at home is to be charged to the provisions against danger, real or pretended, from abroad. --James Madison |
