Press releases promised unpresedented details. Instead we get analogy, and a poor one at that, communism. Leads to a war of ideologies, progress vs regress. vision of world domination, where does he get this? I think he accurately distinguishes three kinds of terrorism, but subsequently blurs those distinctions. Why'd he bother? It is certainly good that we have stopped numerous terrorist plots threatening us here at home, but this belies the notion that our being in Iraq keeps terrorism from our shores. The war against evil men with WMD almost seems disconnected from the war against terrorism. I agree, those who harbor terrorists are on the wrong side. It might be good to have proof of this next time. "Our goal is to defeat the terrorists and their allies at the heart of their power. And so we will defeat the enemy in Iraq." If that's the sole connection, it's a weak one. There are what, a dozen global terrorists in Iraq? The goal, now we're there, of letting Iraqis democratically determine their fate will indirectly--ideologically--help defeat terrorism. It gives people a choice: "The fifth element of our strategy in the war on terror is to deny the militants future recruits by replacing hatred and resentment with democracy and hope across the broader Middle East." All in all, too vague and lofty. |

IMO the U.S. Government and its spokespeople should not be using religious terms like "evil" to describe foes. Terrorists can usually be described as criminals according to local as well as international law. The Al Qaeda types describe the western powers as "evil" too. If they are criminals, their crimes should be thwarted and punished. Decisions on who is or isn't "evil" are not to be made by governments. I believe this mind set started with the late President Reagan. He liked to use movie or comic book concepts to frame problems in the simplest of terms. Sometimes those kind of terms represent fantasy better than reality. |

Actually it started with the Civil War. Lincoln's response was something to the effect that he was more conerned with whether he was on God's side than whether God was on his. It escalated with the Spanish-American War, which is odd because Spain was more deeply Christian than the US has ever been. WWI and WWII and the Cold War. And, yes, Reagan played on it, as Bush does. Only time it didn't really come up was the Revolutionary War because it was fought at least in part for religious freedom. |
