Catholic Church no longer swears by truth of the Bible "THE hierarchy of the Roman Catholic Church has published a teaching document instructing the faithful that some parts of the Bible are not actually true...." Well, I'll be. |

I would agree that not all of the bible should be interpreted literally. But, for any religion or group to profess that they have inside knowledge of what is true and what is not true, smacks of manipulation to justify their own beliefs. Remember that what makes sense from your perspective, may not from another perspective and therefore can not be relied upon to be the infallible truth. |

Shouldn't that be "Some members of the Catholic hierarchy in England, Scotland, and Wales no longer swear by the truth of the bible?" The Catholic Church as a whole (like in the Pope said it) isn't publishing or didn't publish the document. Of course, some might quibble that the Pope isn't the Catholic Church as a whole anyway. IMHO. I'm not disagreeing with the concept that you can't take the bible as a literal document, but I'm having trouble with the word choice. See - we always have been criticized for not reading the bible. We just knew it had little errors Only the shadow knows... |

Recognizing that the stories at the beginning of Genesis should more accurately be considered traditional folklore, and condemning the use of the Bible as a basis for hate is commendable. Good for them for standing as a voice of reason after centuries of misguided interpretation. |

I think we're getting at the heart of the heirarchical publication, questioning the literalness of the Bible. The Bible has perhaps one of the richest combinations of history, myth, fable, parable, exhortation, well, every rhetorical device known to man. Like my topic title, the article baits you with exaggeration on truth and errancy, when all it's really trying to say is that to ignore the richness of the text for literalness is to errantly ignore truth. Here, btw, is the commentary I first read, written, omg, by an atheist! The Bible: what is it good for?. (Actually, there are several opinions at that link.) |
