They're - okay. They're tired and they're stressed but they're good and strong people and now that she is back in gear they have a workable schedule. She goes in the morning after taking Sean to daycare and spends time with the twins and he goes after work and she does dinner and bath for Sean. He's home in time for stories and bed. They will work it out. Our youngest daughter and sil are around the corner and they also have wonderful friends and neighbors. I think they/we have now realized the enormity of what they are dealing with. Not that it's abnormal or medically not doable, but it's big. Thank God my sil has absolutely wonderful insurance. He actually works for Johns Hopkins (not that it makes any difference in the care the twins get,) but they provide incredible medical insurance. The drug she had to get weekly during pregnancy to prevent internal fetal bleeding cost $12,000 a week. Let's talk high maintenance little people But much wanted and much loved

Well, now I'm calling them the "fat little people" instead of the "peanut people." Allie weighs 4 lbs 12 oz and Joey 4 - 8. They have surpassed their birth weights in less than four weeks and by a great deal. Very few "episodes." Episodes are bad. They range from stopping breathing to bowel distention - but they are lessening in frequency. They have been moved from the Intensive NICU again, but not across the hall to Intermediate - they are in another room off Intensive all by themselves. All things look good. They are also wearing little clothes. Not just diapers, and trust me, these are teeny weeny diapers. Have never seen anything like them. But, their ability to control their internal temperature is improving so they can wear little onesies and the temperature in the isolette can be adjusted so they can move to an open isolette. I will say that the NICU is quite warm in itself. The doctors are still suggesting they look at her actual due date (11/20) as a possible release date. They were 33 weeks gestation yesterday. Thanks for praying! You guys do good work.

I guess every day can bring its own set of problems
Both the twins had a bad day Thursday with separate issues...some of which I'm confused on. Most of the family was concentrating on Tess' arrival Thursday, so twin news kind of got lost in the shuffle.Suffice it to say that today is a better day...lots of regulating to do with this and that feeding plan, another blood transfusion, another antibiotic, but still steady growth. One month old tomorrow! The nurses make signs for the isolettes to celebrate milestones like that. What a wonderful group of folks Next week they will be 34 weeks gestation, which is when nipple feeding can normally be introduced. They'll be off that benchmark, however, until the feeding plan can be compressed. I'm not sure what that means, but I think they cannot tolerate too much formula in a short period of time just yet. That will come. When you are old, no one knows when you started drinking like a normal baby. They are normal, what am I saying?, they're just tiny

Thanks for the updating, Pat; please keep them coming. It sounds like their progress is normal for such little ones. |

Another few days of mixed news about the twins. Allison still seems to be consistently more stable than Joey. Yesterday she was moved into an open isolette since her body temp is more under "her" control. She tolerated that for the whole day, so that's good. Allie has started nipple feeding and can tolerate a little at a time. She still has her nasal feeding tube and weighs 4 - 14. Still hooked up to all the leads and monitors, etc...My daughter Kate said the NICU sounded like a casino in Vegas with the steady binging of this monitor or that. Joey still has feeding issues. He is gaining (weighs 4 - 10) but not without bowel and belly problems. They are running a couple of new tests today - and he is on antibiotics. I gather there is an infection somewhere, but she wasn't clear on that. Sharon and her sister Kate spent about two hours with the babies and were pleased. Sharon is fighting off a cold or feeling results from a flu shot, so didn't go down at all on Tuesday and offered to wear a mask yesterday - they said there was no need and she did hold them both. Kate forgot her digital camera Drat!

I haven't been able to say much on this thread other than you all have my prayers. Too many memories of the year I worked in Peds ICU and floated to NICU.....transferred to Adult ICU which was still stressful but did not break my heart quite as much.... |

I can imagine how hard that work is. Sharon has said to me she would prefer that the nurses caring for the kids stay consistent, but she is speaking like a mom. I haven't bothered to suggest to her that the morale of the staff needs to be seriously considered, and I feel it is. The nurses' full work week is three 12 hour days and they do not get assigned the same babies every day. Sharon unfortunately witnessed one death. She was kind of squeezed in a corner and couldn't escape. This is hard on the parents - them I mean, not me. Well, it's difficult for us - that goes without saying - but the daily ups and downs are theirs. |

Allie is coming home tomorrow!!! This kind of just happened on Wednesday and she is thriving. Up to 5 lbs. 8 oz. as of Wednesday and drinking her bottle like a little trouper. Needless to say they are excited but a bit apprehensive. Of course their soon to be 3 year old just got roseola He's not contagious any more, but it's one of those things. My sil will take next week off - since they still need to be at the hospital for Joey - and then we will go down next Sunday. Don will stay a day or two and then come back and fetch me when it's time. Obviously I will be going back when little brother comes home. Joey is doing okay...they still cannot figure out why his digestive tract is not up to par, but nothing glaring has shown up - it may just be developmental and he hasn't quite matured in that area yet. He will. He keeps gaining weight but his big sister is really his big sister. They will be 37 weeks gestational age on Monday - and 37 weeks can be considered term. We are excited too but caring for a six pounder will be very different from what I did this week with a two week old who has gained 10 ounces in 14 days and is up to 8 lbs. 12 oz. Tess' chins have chins. I'm sure Allie and Joey will give her a run for her money in the future. Thanks for all the continued good thoughts and prayers - we really appreciate them and do need them.
