Tolls; Increase in NY Thruway tolls

After leaving the rally Christine and I traveled to western NY. partially on the NY Thruway (I-90 in NY). As luck would have it the tolls increased 35% on the day we left. On one 12 mile segment they charged $1.70 on another (about 2 miles) they charged .45 cents. On longer segments it was somewhat less ($10.00 for 50 miles)but still very expensive. They charged extra for being over 7'6" high as well as the number of axels.

By contrast in West Virginia the whole length of their toll road cost $6.00 MH and toad.

Frank,
I think NY has the most expensive toll roads in the east, if not the nation. There was a graph in our paper when the new rates were publicized and per mile, we're way higher than neighboring states. Our gas is not fun either.

There was a thread about this over at RV.net; be thankful you have a MH as the tolls for a 5er are almost twice what you were paying if the griping over there was true.

Charging for over 7'6" seems like outright robbery. What difference does it make, as long as the vehicle is under the legal 13'6"?

I am totally against toll roads and bridges, anyhow. They are elitist and a terrible impediment to traffic. I think the funds to maintain them should come from the public funds and if that means an increase in taxes, so be it.

The Pennsylvania Turnpike is the oldest toll road in the US and the most expensive, never mind the most dangerous and in the worst condition!! I firmly believe it has been mismanaged and the funds misused; for what it costs it shoulod be the best road in the US!

I think you're right Heather. But instead of decrease and eliminate as roads and bridges are paid for the politicians keep grabbing. It would be interesting to be able to audit the toll funds. What an idea, I wonder who is supposed to do that ?

I also keep hearing that they would like to institute tolls on Interstate System roads

I think that is like "which one of us mice is going to put a bell on the cat??" Too scary to take on Big Brother. But of course I agree.

As for putting tollbooths on all Interstates, just let them try it! The resultant traffic jams would be so terrible, the country would grind to a halt.

The day we left the rally and headed west, was the first day of the new tolls. It was rather annoying, as they person in the tollbooth had to call someone to find out which ticket to give us!

It cost us almost $20.00 to drive that darn road!!!!
