Mur, My bad I missed that one. All the others used your terms and that was what I meant to imply there as well. |

I have run into the 'hit the outlanders hard' approach a time or two. The strongest was in getting information for my trip last fall. The person at Iowa Tourism (the government office) told me that they did not mail to places outside of the U.S. I was so shocked I couldn't be polite on the phone, but I did start a thread on rv.net along the lines, of let your government know that my tourist $ are as good as yours. A number of Iowans posted that they had contacted suitable decision makers. There is a different approach almost all over the continent re. free access Internet sites. I know in Canada there is Federal money in the mix. So, no non-resident fees for Internet. It's more of a 'you pay taxes somewhere' outlook, let's be reciprocal about this. That's what you want isn't it Corky?

Kopit, I get mad when ever I see this "hit the outlanders" attitude as you call it. Like I said earlier I will not spend a dime in either Grand Canyon City or West Yellowstone because of their rebate programs to the locals. I guess it may not be a big deal to some but I take it seriously and to see it as part of a governmental program got my dander up. I'm extremely careful to buy licenses where ever I fish because I think the money does good things and supports good programs, so I'm left with a choice of not fishing or paying the danegelt and feeling abused. I don't do abused well! As travelers I think it serves all of us well to discourage this type of discrimination. |

Corky: Should we all get mad that, US, Canadian citizens, have to pay sales tax on a replacement tire bough here on our soil, or almost anywhere in the U.S.A.while, you, as a foreigner visiting our country will have the right to claim back and get a refund of all taxes paid on almost everything you bough here when you leave? Should we also call it: "discriminatory pricing based on origin" as you said?? Life's unfair.

Jackd, In California at least you can get a card that will solve that problem, not many people know it. Not sure who issues it, your people or our state people but it save you state sales tax as long as you're taking the purchase out of the country with you. Visiting Mexican nationals use them all the time around here. I'll try and find the information and post it, hadn't even occurred to me, until you mentioned it. Our's is better, you don't pay the sales tax with the card! It's not discriminatory pricing because locals pay the same tax, but I'm in favor of not paying anything you don't have to. I'd have to buy a lot of stuff to make the paper work worth the effort, but for big things it's worth the effort. Is your sales tax provincial or national? Here the sales taxes are state so you have many entities to deal with, maybe there's a website with more information on other states. |

Corky:
Our politician did not know if they should implement either a provincial tax or a national tax. After much debates, they decided to go with both, one on top of the other. (yes, tax on tax) The national tax (called Goods and Services Tax or GST) is 7% provincial taxs vary from 0$ in Alberta (the rich) to 10% in P.E.I. Say you buy a tire for your trck $150.00 ................................ Add GST 7% 10.50 ................................ Sub Total: $160.50 Add prov. sales tax (8% in Ontario) on $160.50= $12.84 Total:....................................... $173.34 The GST applies to both products and services. |

Jackd, So does the border refund cover both? Your provincial sales taxes look about like what we have here, so if you don't refund both it's points for California as we don't have Federal sales tax yet. By the way on tires I worry more about disposal fees than the taxes, size related and steep. |

The refund also includes the provincial sales tax, although there are variation between provinces. You can even get a tax refund on thing you do not take out of the country, ex. campground fees, hotels, : Points Canada Tire disposal fees: Between $3. & $10., depending on size. |

Jackd, We don't tax services, or unprepared food! Point California!!! We should look at sending tires up there for disposal, there's be a nice profit in. $7.50 to $18.00 U.S. figure exchange rate pays for transport and there's fair money in it, California generates lots of worn out tires. Although the local room/bed taxes are there, cities and counties. Just noticed, there are way to many mentions of taxes once again.

Not taxable of it is based on a commission basis. Taxable if it is a flat rate per transaction. |
