Is your fishing license handled at a national or provincial level and how expensive is a non-citizen/non-resident licenses? How commonly available are places to buy the licenses, if I make it into Canada should I make sure to get a licenses in a bigger town? |

Here you go Corky, http://www.in-fisherman.com/reference/fishing_licenses/ Why would you think that there would be such a thing as a 'national' fishing license?????? |

Kopit, Thanks for the lead. After checking I think Canada just dropped of the list for this trip, anyplace that charges three times more for foreigners is even worse than California, at least we only have one class of non-resident license. |

I am really a non-fisherman. I have no sense of when I have a fish on the line. So, I don't pay a whole of attention. Is it possible that fishing licenses are just plain more expensive up here? |

Kopit, The prices aren't bad, it's the attitude, stick it to the tourista, same reason I quit fishing in Mexico a few years ago. Last time I fished in Canada it was a package deal and I didn't see the license cost. I really don't paying a nonresident of an area fee, but draw the line at paying an extra fee for being an American. |

I had a quick look at the tourism site for here. It's all linked to outfitters and lodges. But I know you can buy licenses at local sites, just for yourself. Outfitters and lodges are going to have things shown as package prices. Is there a chance that is what you are looking at? BTW I recently called for the tourism guides to the provinces & state I'm visiting this summer. Two were very clear, they prefer to get calls, rather than rely on the Internet site. So many things are open to interpretation. |

Mur, http://wlapwww.gov.bc.ca/fw/fish/licences/intro.html BC Resident $36.00 Canadian $55.00 Non Canadian $80.00 Like I said, more for being from the U.S., I did say the prices weren't bad. Would you patronize a store down here that had a different higher set of prices for Canadians? I feel the same way about Grand Canyon Village and West Yellowstone, both towns have "Chamber of Commerce Cards" for locals that get locals a big discount or rebate on prices. |

corky, corky, corky..... or should I be recently calling you cranky, cranky, cranky? California: Resident $33.35 / Nonresident $89.50 B. C. : BC Resident $36.00 / NonCanadian $80.00 But you say: "After checking I think Canada just dropped off the list for this trip, any place that charges three times more for foreigners is even worse than California". Oh - "zatso?"..... I KNOW you're good with math - tell me the difference between the two? Except that your Non-Resident surcharge is about 20% HIGHER????
Tell me - what is with your "Canadian-PMS thing", the last week or so? Next thing I know, you'll throw your bottle of Maple Syrup out the back door...... :scratchchin: |

Mur, California doesn't treat you as a Canadian any differently than any other non-resident who doesn't pay state income tax, where much of Fish and Games funding comes from. Everything in California is high and I did give you credit for good prices, but this differential charge for being foreign is something I refuse to pay to anybody. Like I said would you patronize a place here that charged you more because you're from Canada? |

I don't understand what you're talking about - YOU DO!!! If you dont live in California, you pay the higher fee! If you don't live in BC, you pay the higher fee! So if we have a fisherman from Quebec, and we give him an "in-between" price - this chokes you UP? So sad.... What is this "Because I'm American" crap, anyway??? You been watching O'Really or Ann Poultice again? Reading Buchanans book - he, of the "Canuckistan" fame? Do you think that Scots, Germans and the French fish for FREE? "Get off the cross - we need the wood for the Ark..." |

Mur, Yes, place of origin pricing chokes me up, big time! I quit fishing in Mexico a few years back when they switched to it! I don't say it isn't your right to do it if you want, but it's my right to say I'll visit other places that don't do it. P.S. Never once said American, used the term you use "foreign". |

BUT YOU STILL HAVE NOT TOLD ME WHAT THE DIFFERENCE IS, between what YOUR state does, and MY Province does....
Never MIND, how this is some convoluted form of "anti-Americanism"....

Mur, Has nothing to do with Americanism or Anti Americanism, has do do with the value of things. My state doesn't differentiate based on national origin, only on whether or not you pay income taxes within this state or not. In the reality of the situation between the actual fishing license cost and the portion of my state income tax that goes to Fish and Game I probably pay about $100 for a California fishing license. B.C. doesn't price on fair value it prices based on how local you are, it's called discriminatory pricing based on origin. Kind of like the "locals only" beaches they tried to setup down here for surfing. Place of origin pricing has been illegal here for years unless you can prove a actual cost reason for it. |
