Five Feet of snow..

There is still five feet of snow at my favorite wilderness campgrounds. (All above 7000 feet.).

And I am sure it is snowing there again today. Probably for the next 2 or 3 days..

Called the ranger station today.. They tried to open up some roads last Wednesday.

But it snowed so hard, they barely got the snowplows out. They don’t know if they will have any roads open before the Memorial Day weekend.

Even if they do. There most likely will be to much snow to open the campgrounds..

There are three routes to the, ’Walk of a Hundred Redwoods’. They may have one open for Memorial Day..

Anybody heard anything about road Openings in Yellowstone N.P. The web site only gives estimates I believe...

Even though many campgrounds still have snow, right now is a perfect time to camp and see wildlife, before other campers get out there for the summer. Pretty soon much of the wildlife will be headed for more remote areas.

Buddy, check the YNP webcams...it looks like there's no more snow in those parts. The webcam for the Mammoth area in YNP looks white, but that's just the natural feature.

Now, Mammoth ski resort in California...I've skiied there a long time ago. :)

The Road to Mammoth at Yellowstone, is open year round up to the North east entrance... We like to travel the Beartooth Highway to Red Lodge on Our trips to North Dakota. By entering at the West entrance or at the Tetons. We can vary our route through the park..

The Beartooth High is 11,000 feet at Beartooth pass.. It snows there in August. :)

It opens depending on weather conditions... This year they are trying for May 27th. But that’s has been the expected opening date given each year.

I just looked it up on my atlas, and after we camped at Mammoth last July, we drove out that very highway a ways. It was beautiful. There were campgrounds out there, way off the highway in the wilderness, but they were full.

We headed for lower altitudes in August, when water on our picnic table froze overnight, in Montana. We were sorry to leave the mountains in that area so early, but even early storms can be vicious.

The earlier you get to Yellowstone, the more wildlife. Wish I was going too... :)

First time I drove through Yellowstone by myself. The water pump on my 1962 Plymouth froze up and cracked, on our over night stay.. I was lucky something worse didn't happen.

Should have listen to my Dad and changed the antifreeze before I left.

But when your 19. You always seem to be a little short on time and money..

And bad decisions sometimes makes it worse... :)

What did you do when that happened? It's not like there's auto parts stores or garages in Yellowstone. There are some in a few of the villages these days, but how did you fix it there when you were 19?

We broke down going north out of Yellowstone last year. We took the highway out of West Yellowstone, north through the mountains and big canyon/river gorge headed to Montana. Evidently we had gotten bad gas in W. Yellowstone, and the engine died on that narrow 2 lane highway in the gorge. We coasted to an old historic log church/camp on the highway, and used their phone to call AAA in Big Sky. We were towed to Bozeman, bought a new fuel filter, but ended up not needing it.

I had gotten into West Yellowstone late and spent the night there in a motel.. Got up the next morning and was greeted by a unwelcome noise from my La Bamba...

The same year, in the same car. The plastic distributor drive gear broke in Hope, Canada. Beautiful place to break down. If ya got money.. :)

But I had to wait 3 days for the Greyhound to deliver the 3 dollar part.. I was so broke I had to drive 27 hours straight through to home. Stopped in Portland and filled up with gas. In Modesto I figured out how much more gas I would need to get home. And figured I had enough money to get a donut.

Got home with an 1/8th of a tank of gas left. And .85 cents in my pocket..

I was worried sick. I wasn’t about to call home for help. Not on my first trip out on my own..

I was worried I was going to run out of gas right at the city limit sign..

La Bamba pulled through for me in the end. Mom and dad will never know the troubles I have seen..

Unless you spill the beans..

Remember..

A wink and a nod. Mean nothing to a blind man..

Buddy, I'm glad you were in West Yellowstone when that happened. I'll bet that town has really grown over the years. They have an internet cafe there now, in a bar! We camped west of there in a free campground on a lake...called Cherry Creek.

I think that is pure genius how you made it home on practically nothing. I'll bet you saw some beautiful countryside on that trip...I hope you were able to drive it in daylight and see everything. Driving at night on mountainous passes and narrow winding roads is not fun, and there's black cows out there on the roads because there's open grazing everywhere.

Glad you made it home OK, that is a great story.

And BTW, I won't tell! :shhh:

Bus came in late morning. Got the La Bamba running early afternoon. Cut across North East Washington over to I-5. I remember it was dark in Portland. And dark and cold over Grants Pass. So cold that the carburetor was icing up.

Except for the years I was overseas. I have made the pilgrimage to N.D. almost every year since we moved to California in 1957.. If it’s west of the Mississippi and runs North and south or west. I’ve probably driven or ridden on it. Both in the day and the night.. :)

I remember my dad pointing out the window. Saying.. ‘There's the old road‘..

Do the same myself nowadays.

But the difference between the old road and new road aren’t as dramatic today.. As they were back then..

Ever travel the OLD, OLD Tioga Road into Yosemite? There are still parts of the Old, Old 99 over the Grapevine you can travel.. Old Beartooth pass was a full day trip on it’s own.. Figure on another day through Provo and Salt Lake City. Two lane road all the way. Right downtown passed the cathedral. It was at least a 3 1/2 day trip from California To N.D. And they would have to be long days at that.

Last year. Made it in 2 easy days. 15 hours from West Yellowstone. To Jackpot Nevada and Tonopah.. I had to point out, to my son, the Lady’s Clubs in Goldfield. And Fran's Ranch in Betty.

It was 22 degrees and snowing hard when we left West Yellowstone. And 118 when we stopped in Stovepipe Wells in Death Valley..

No way it would have been possible in the old 1957 Ford. Can’t imagine how we did all those trips on the two lane roads and no air-conditioning.. No tape players no CD’s. And radio for the few minutes you were near a town..

They grew us tough in the old days.. :)

Intermission..

My parents used to point out "the old road" also. I was born in Madera and we used to go up to Yosemite, and I remember Hwy. 99, well, I don't remember much of it, just the reference to it mostly, and the Grapevine.

Last year we saw so much construction of 2 lane highways, always making them wider, or divided highways. Even Yellowstone, unfortunately, so that it'll be easier for the traffic to exceed the 45 mph speedlimit and race throught the park.

Yup, the days of entertaining ourselvbes in the car on long trips are long gone. I can remember listening to XTRA radio station from Tijuana when travelling in So. California. Those odd stations in the middle of nowhere playing country or Christian music. You knew the cars with air-conditioning...because all their windows were rolled up, and ours were down. It was a big deal to watch the odometer turn 100,000 and watch the zeros go round. And check the speedometer with markers on the side of the road.

Well, if you make your yearly trek this year, annual pilgrimage, I'll be thinking of you, and hoping you are having a great nostalgic trip, and making new memories.
