I picked up the MH today at Cummins, and this is what they replaced.

Turbocharger- replace due to waste gate failure
Exhaust manifold - warped
bill would have been 1200.00 but fortunately was under warrantee.

Frank,
I doubt the bill would have been that low if you were paying it. You sure that's not just manufactures parts cost?

What did you do on the air chuck deal?

Corky,

The cost was less than I expected. You are probably right. I figured double that.
However, it's done and I can concentrate on getting started on our trip.
Not sure as to what I will do on the air chuck.

Yes, it was nice walking out of Cummins without having to mortgage the
farm!

What cost the manifold to warp?
That would be something I'd worry about in the future.

Kajtek,

I asked and they said it was excessive heat that caused the warp, they also said it was a common problem, often accompained buy broken bolts. (the bolts in this case did not fail) It sounds like a design problem. However I did throw a belt and
that may have caused excessive heat to build up.

From Experience, all manifolds will warp when taken off. Gas Diesel, it doesnt matter. Now, how much it warps does. It can usually be machined but since it was a warranty job, they just replace it. when you take a manifold off, it has to be detorqued just like when put on it has to be torqued down in sequence. Dont let anyone tell you different.
Glad they did it for free, just keep you papers in case you need them in the future.
My 2 cents. Danny

Thanks Danny I'll definitely keep that in mind. I just hope all goes well for the next couple of years.

If you threw the belt that drives the water pump off, and then run it any distance it is understandable that the manifold was damaged. I would be concerned of shortened life of the rest of the engine components too. When a belt comes off, and the engine temp starts of climb, it's time to pull over and shut the engine down, unless it's a life and death situation.

Yeah, I know that can cause trouble, however it never got hot enough to set off a sensor and they are all working corrrectly. Hopefully it didn't get that hot. Cummins said it was a common problem.
