Just recently heard some group has won funding to restore The Beer House. "Beer cans quickly became John's exclusive medium -- a convenient one, since John drank a lot of beer. He worked on the house for the next 18 years, incorporating a six-pack a day into its adornment -- roughly 39,000 cans. He linked pull-tabs into long streamers to make curtains that chimed when the wind blew. "This curtain idea is just one of those dreams in the back of my noodle," he explained at the time. "John thought beer cured everything," explained Mary, his wife, after John had died (in 1988)." Some other links: History, Restoration. Some Pictures. |

Gotta admire anyone who could have such a vision and follow through with it until his death..... Not sure I would want to live in a beer can house, but to each their own.....besides I don't like beer in a can! Hmm, maybe a beer bottle house.

The pictures of the Beer Can House are so stark and cold. Even concrete exudes more warmth. I guess the builder felt cozy and warm surrounded by all his beer cans, maybe it's something you just have to be there in person to experience. Kind of like the Garden of Eden in Kansas. Log cabin built totally of concrete. But it has warmth! Have they figured out how much money is tied up in drinking all those cans of beer??

Good one Heather, I wonder if (you know who) is thinking about building a similar house or just a good excuse to overindulge.

Hmmmm....doubt he needs an excuse... I think it would be a very $$$ way to build, though. Consider the cost of the beer (how many cans would one need?), and up here, the money lost by not recycling (up to 6 cents a can), and the material to insulate...polyfoam squrted into each can?...and the glue to hold them together.... and don't forget to wash each can thoroughly; the yeast smell would bowl you over...

we saw some houses made of beer and soda pop bottles in mexico many years ago. and I read about a guy in new mexico that built a house of beer and pop cans...filled with sand I think, and then mortered together and plastered inside and out. it's really not a bad idea for recycling much better than a sod house.there's a lady up near me that is living in a house built of hay bales (stuccoed inside and out). I have to wonder about that one because stucco cracks, so there will be a lot of bugs and mice in her walls. |

That's in Naha, Okinawa, the wife says. There all 「オリオンビール」の缶 (Orion Beer cans, a local brew--that much I can still read). |
