Our Beloved Prime Minister Has A New Nickname; Bestowed by the British "Economist" Mag

Our Prime Minister's gaining a reputation for doing nothing. At least until the situations's so bad he has to bribe someone to patch up the issue.

Now that reputation's spreading internationally... The Economist Magazine in Britain has decided to call him "Mr. Dithers"...
Quote:

As finance minister, Mr Martin acquired a reputation as a tough and decisive deficit-cutter who transformed the public finances and oversaw the renaissance of the Canadian economy. But as prime minister, his faltering leadership has earned him the sobriquet of “Mr Dithers”. At an election last June intended to give him a personal mandate, the Liberals scraped back, reduced to a parliamentary minority. Both before and since, Mr Martin's main concern seems to have been to court popularity by parading a generous social conscience.

The Whole Article

Where do we get these clowns??? Why can't we elect a decent Prime Minister? I don't believe we've had a really good one in my lifetime! And I'm OLD!

Yeah, it's sad that the only one who showed moments of Decisiveness was Trudeau. (much as I hate to say anything good about him, he didnt take any crap from the FLQ and brought in the Army)

But overall, "it weren't much of a trade".

I'll take that as a rhetorical question--I mean, you wouldn't be asking US, would you?

Hey, Chris, your guys are usually decisive...

They make a lot of stupid decisions, but at least they DECIDE! :faint:

Kerry dithers deciding, Bush dithers justifying.

The Globe & Mail, usually pro-liberal, added this:
Quote:

The Martin government has come under fire for the sluggish pace at which it makes difficult decisions.

Nearly one-fifth of the Senate is empty because Martin has failed to make a single appointment to the Upper Chamber. It took months to devise a simple new process to fill vacant seats on the Supreme Court.

Government employees in foreign affairs, international trade, defence, and international development have been left cooling their heels while one draft version after another of a foreign-policy review gathers dust.

And Mr. Martin's agreement to sign special side deals with provinces on health care and equalization have merely triggered an avalanche of additional requests.

Federal-provincial relations were the main focus of the Economist article, slated to hit most Canadian news stands next week.

Polspy. an irreverent Commentary site, finished its article with this:
Quote:

Way to go, Mr. Dithers. Keep your chin up.

Yes, you have one.

Mr. Dithers, Martin ??? Naaaaahhh
who's able to make a decision while being on borrowed time and life support???
One little faux pas and he's history.
The opposition parties won't let him decide anything unless they agree.
Wanna bet on the date of the next election?
My guess:. June 2005 at the latest.

As I recall, the early 60's had two or maybe three elections within about 3 or 4 years, back and forth between Pearson and Dief minorities - I was just a kid, but it seems to me people got pretty fed up with it.

Jack, Mr. Dithers is history anyway, especially by your dates.

He should be trying to get things done...

Remember, he did nothing while he was sitting on a majority as well.

Martin was a half good Minister of Finance. Under his tenure (not saying he did it alone) the budget deficits were tackled and major surplusses were made available to pay back part of the debt.
As a Prime Minister, he does not have the liberal balls to do the job
