$130 Billion into it, $50 Billion more to come, and the program only has a .500 batting record - on top of which, iirc, the "successes" involved target missles with a transmitter aboard that essentially shouted out "HERE I AM!", a favour that I think Korea is somehow unlikely to do for us.....

Does anyone truly believe in this "hit a bullet with a bullet" concept?

You don't start off perfect. That's why we run tests.

I don't know if this is the right system, whether to trashcan it and move on, but I do want something.

Is this one of the systems where you just get in range then "open fire with a shotgun" type of deals?

Like with NASA there must be spinoffs we all benefit from, but...

If Russia tossed 1000 Nukes at America.

And we had 4000 missiles to knock them down.

And we indeed knocked them all down..

The earth would be covered in radioactive dust..

THE EARTH WOULD STILL BE DOOMED..

What is the point?

It would be cheaper and safer to pay a bribe...

No, it's my understanding that it's supposed to be surgically accurate - each defending missle is supposed to have an excellent chance of hitting it's target.

"Close" is not good enough with incoming nukes.

And then there's the "minor" matter of where the nuke will fall, once hit.... anybody got a globe and a piece of string? Hmmmm???

It looks like to me..

IT CONTAMINATES AMERICA'S OIL RESERVES IN ALASKA.

And Canada enters the age of nuclear energy. :)

Thank you Canucks

For your contribution to the defense of the good ole USA.

You got our back again.. :)

Anybody got any idea if I have any wiggle room. If I settle in Benedict, North Dakota.

With a little luck, BIA, the crap would fall right on ya - you wouldn't even know what hit you....

I think we'll be fine, Pentax, as long as Paul Martin, otherwise known as "Mr. Dithers", issues us all with catcher's mitts (or maybe goalie gloves, there's lots of those lying around). :noproblem:

And people thought Mr Dithers didn't have a plan.. I betcha that was it all along.. :tiphat:

Could be, brew - I worked several years for a guy for whom the old Safety Slogan "When in doubt, don't" turned out to be the strongest part of his Management Policy. :(

Without the "shotgun" thing then I guess they are going not for the transport and guidance, they are going for the warhead.

Very difficult. I'm glad there are smarter people in the world than me.

Time and location matters too. Many say no matter, I think if we destroy that sucker in outerspace we're better off.

Pentax,
A Globe and a piece of string sure makes the world smaller.

Yup, I think you got a lot more to worry about with one guy and an over-stuffed suitcase, or an import car on a container ship in S.F. harbor - with an "unlisted option" in it's trunk.....
