Republican Senators and Rep.s say Bush lied.. They say that Bush did not really mean to say he would keep, raising the cap on FICA, on the table.. Instead he lied, just to Appease the Democrats, and give the appearance of a willingness to negotiate.. |

Let me see, the first sentence says the Republicans said Bush lied. The second sentence says he mispoke and didn't really mean what he said. Third sentence is a proclamation from buddy which as usual has little basis in fact. I'm inclined to think the second sentence of your post is more correct. The world according to Buddy, is a bit distorted IMO. |

This is what Bush said: Bush weighs Social Security tax hike Won’t rule out increase on those earning more than $90,000 a year Buddy says: Yep. All over the news tonight Republicans including Sec. O’Neil, say there is no way Bush will raise taxes. He is just being an appeaser.. |

Buddy The article I read today in the Wall Street Journal quoted Bush as saying, he would stand firm against raising the % deduction from workers paychecks. But, that everything else, including the cap was negotiable. Perhaps some of his party members don't agree. But, that is what he said, and I believe he meant it. |

The cap goes up all the time. It doesn't have to be on the table, its on autopilot. It takes action to stop it from going up, not make it go up. |

J Wrong It is only adjusted, not raised.. Bush meant he would immediately increase the cap above that adjustment figure. Talk is to 200,000. Some are suggesting that it should be completely removed. Most think Bush will accept this increased cap. . So he can get votes for privatization.. The Market is in a crises. That will come due as BB withdraw funds to guaranteed investments.. BB will find that interest rates are going to skyrocket as the Fed have to redeem the SS bonds and place them in the private sector. CD’s and bank accounts will provide a safe guaranteed lock box for their money.. Remember 20% CD’s in the 80’s? Bush currently is working two forces to shore up the market. Forced Savings plans. Immersing America in a flood of illegal immigrants. Using their FICA contributions to fund SS through the BB era.. Preventing the marketing of the SS bonds.. |

Nice terminology. I remember in my patch days working with a guy that had been in the Army. He said the Army will never retreat. They might Advance To The Rear, but they won't retreat. |

The cap goes up on autopilot. If the President says he won't raise the cap, then it goes up on autopilot, lots of folks won't understand. You understand, right? |

J Yes it is similar to the COLA adjustment.. The beauty of financial lingo. My SS has a 50% benefit/dependant. With a Family max of 150% The above translates into. If I get 100/month in SS and have one child. That child gets 50 dollars. For a family total of 150 dollars. If I am married and have one child. I get 100 dollars wife 25 and child 25.. For a family max of 150 dollars.. The part of the SS law that hits the negative news? ‘50% benefit/dependant’, That is the way it is stated in the law.. No mention of the family limit.. |

J It may not go up It depends on the economy. It will not go down.. Bush’s plan is to eliminate this method of setting a cap.. |

That's where I say the Devil is in the details. Folks are only guessing at the details. Folks are associating personal accounts that have been stated right along with their guesses as to what other details are. They are not distinguishing between proposed and guessed. I have examined what I believe has been stated in the clear. I have seen no proposals from the President on how Death or Disability will be handled. |

J says: I have seen no proposals from the President on how Death or Disability will be handled. Buddy says: That is what Greenspan said. ( he didn't know Bush had a plan yet) Yet the press says he supports Bush’s plan.. Go figure. The following is Bush’s Commission proposal. Guiding Principles The Commission was asked to make recommendations to modernize and restore fiscal soundness to Social Security, using six guiding principles: · Modernization must not change Social Security benefits for retirees or near-retirees. · The entire Social Security surplus must be dedicated only to Social Security. · Social Security payroll taxes must not be increased. · The government must not invest Social Security funds in the stock market. · Modernization must preserve Social Security`s disability and survivors insurance programs. · Modernization must include individually controlled, voluntary personal retirement accounts, which will augment Social Security. Findings of the Commission Public hearings began on June 11 and concluded on December 11, 2001. The Commission released its final report on December 21, 2001 (revised March 19, 2002), "/reports/Final_report.pdf". On October 3, 2002, the Committee on Finance of the U.S. Senate held a hearing on the final report of the Commission. Commission member Olivia Mitchell presented "" at the hearing. |

Thought the commission laid out several plans. CATO advocates one not Bush's. We already discused that. We've got 2,403 threads going on SS. No wonder we get no where discussing it. |
