How hard can a job be.

If a man is capable of working 3 and 4 and even more consecutive 24 hour shifts? All at double-time.. All at over 1000/day.

These same people will TRADE shifts.. And accumulate as many as 60 consecutive vacation days..

You don’t see any problem there?

The big problem is they do not hire ONE EXTRA MAN..

If a person gets sick He receives sick pay. And his replacement receives double-time..

Same for vacations. Man goes on vacation. He receives vacation pay.. His replacement receives double-time.

Charts can be made. And a very good estimate of the number of extra men needed to fill vacancies on any given day, can be estimated..

It’s not just fire and police.

Sheriff and correctional officers are the same way

Example:

Both the nonpartisan legislative analyst and the state auditor have repeatedly criticized the Department of Corrections for what they say is poor personnel management. The analyst's office has estimated management problems cost taxpayers an unnecessary $35 million a year in overtime and other costs

Speaking as a retired fireman (California) I find your statements out of line. NONE of the fireman I know make anywhere near what you are stating. Your fireman might make that from where your from! You probably also don't like the death benefits that a firemans family would get for getting killed in the line of duty as he or she was dragging your rear end out of danger. Many of my co-workers and friends names are carved into many walls around the country lighten up a little!

A great Bush economy?

Unemployment figures for a few Central California cities..

Example:

McFarland, CA (2000): 9,618

Buddy says that comes to more than 3000 unemployed, using 2000 Population figures..

I got tired of picking out cities with over 15% unemployment.

My son is s 10 year veteran top line firefighter and he makes about $30K a year the same as the firefighters at WDW make. His life is on the line several times each week and makes quite a few calle every day. In 10 years he has saved hundreds of lives and if you think a firefighter's job is an easy one, I would like to see you pass the physicals and training they have to go through.

I'm sure there are tens of thousands of firefighters who would like to know where these high paid firefighters work.

Don't tell us New York or California. We want to know where in America.

I am going to tell you California. Because that is the area I am talking about.

I am not barring any disrespect to firemen or law enforcement. They have a valuable job and they are compensated for it properly. At a rate of 50 to 60 thousand a year.

We have MANY FIREMEN and other law enforcement earning 150000/year. 100,000 of it in overtime.

It is insane to offer 100,000/year in double time. When the following unemployment conditions exist..

Geography is a big factor in economics you used to argue. One area of the country can be doing well while another not you used to argue. Again, why don't they move to where there's work, get a job and quit griping about what someone else earns working. I moved 1200 miles once, why can't they?

I will make a post.. Then have to respond to a question in another topic..

They are not double posts.. If I do not repost. It will be thought I did not respond to the question..

Trust me I had a completely new topic lined up. That happen to fit well as a answer to this topic.

In 1949, historian and journalist Carey McWilliams wrote, "The farm labor problem is the cancer which lies beneath the beauty, richness, and fertility" of the Central Valley. More than 50 years later, McWilliams would probably come to the same conclusion. By the most conservative estimates, 50 percent of the valley's farm laborers are illegal immigrants -- other estimates run as high as 90 percent. Despite farm labor laws, workers are still subject to sub-minimum wages and dangerous working conditions. Whole towns are virtual labor camps aptly described as "California's Appalachia." The region is home to a multi-generational underclass of low-skilled, poorly educated workers and their families. But unlike immigrants of the past, these workers show no sign of being absorbed into an economic track that will improve their lives.

Also

According to the report released Wednesday, six of the top 10 metropolitan areas in the nation with the highest unemployment rates are in the Central Valley, a vast 19-county region stretching some 450 miles from Bakersfield to Redding.

Buddy says:

THERE ARE LEGITIMATE REASONS FOR FIREFIGHTERS TO WORK WEEKS ON END. WITHOUT BREAK. DRAWING DOUBLE-TIME, AT OVER 1000/day.

It is the fact that in addition to these legitimate reasons.

They are receiving double time for filling in for sick days and vacation time.

At double-time

That's what I am complaining about..

PLEASE... Buddy tell us where these wages are being made in California. The $150,000.00 a year ones. What Fire Department ??? I need to let all my friends that are still firefighters know so they can apply for these high dollar positions. $1000.00 a day double time? $1000.00 divided by 24 hours = $41.66 per hour. Double time you state, so they make $20.83 per hour on base pay? Are you talking Captains? Crewpersons? Engineers? WOW highway robbery!!!!!

California Central valley..

Starting pay is apx 40 grand a year..

Engineer is going to be 50 to 60 grand depending on time in service..

That's why I posted central valley unemployment numbers.

Remember they work 10 days a month. 24 hours/day. or 240 month..

Anything over about 180 hours/month is considered over time.. So because of the shift situation they negotiated a pretty monthly income..

But like I said..

It is the double time they receive for filing in for vacation and sick time that bothers me..

That is a pretty constant number.. And fill in extra firemen could be put to work at regular pay. Instead of double time..
