Today is the darkest day that the NHL has faced in it's 72 year history, the season has been canceled due to a break down in labor negotiations. The disagreement stems from the Owners demanding a salary cap, and cost certainty, the players want a payment plan that is not tied to cost certainty. This disagreement has gone on for the past 6 months, and today they finally called a halt to the season, as the major impasse could not be breached. What I do not understand is basically two things - 1 - Why cannot the players understand that before you can pay any costs, you must know what that cost is, each of us practice this every day, a loaf of bread costs X dollars, it does not depend on whether the bakery is making money or not, if you want the bread, you pay the cost the bakery/store have set, but you know your cost. The players operate a so called Union - yet it's members may leave North America and play in Europe, taking jobs from players of that particular country, and at a salary that in some cases is 10% of the salary earned in the NHL. I would call that Scab labor, they call it earning a living, yet they work for a Union, does not make sense to me. For sure the NHL will have a different look, if and whenever it goes back on the ice, lets all hope it is for the better. |
