CNN morning show was looking at the miles drive tax proposal out here in California, but they missed much of really bad parts. Proposed box would know not only where you've driven but when, from that the possibilities are endless. With a good GIS you could assess speeding tickets, improper stops, parking over time fines, etc. Were you near a crime scene, are your driving habits bad, and so on. How much would this data be worth to the insurance people, what would other people do with this information, could parents get a dump of their kids information. A little more electronics and you could have a Vchip for no go areas, shut down all cars in an area, charge extra for going into high traffic areas. Video surveillance is bad enough, digital surveillance is downright frightening. |

1984 is the bureaucratic state of mind, not a date in time. The next step is to go to an on person recorder/reporter so the charges can cover more areas. Does your cell phone do GPS? How sure are you that it's off when you turn it off? Just to see some what your cell is doing you can get in to it a little. I went into mine and disabled the GPS, heard from the cell company within 4 hours, told me my phone was "malfunctioning". http://www.wilsonelectronics.com/amps/Phon...est%20Modes.pdf |

Corky, you are ridiculously paranoid - Good Work! Every time I hear of another wonderful service computers can do for me, I think; "Yes, but at what cost to my privacy??" Comes from reading too much Heinlein....

Technology is fullfilling their "State of Mind". Hop on the bus, Gus, the only cars on the road in the future will be the Politicans out collecting our taxes. I believe the road taxes in California go into a "general" fund, how much can anyone drive to fill that hole? |

Yet another reason why no one in their right minds would live in the People's Republic of Kalifornia. Come on over to NM Corky, plenty of room on the road and our wonderful state parks have lots of hookups!

Dan, You saying that NM doesn't have the same problems with gas tax revenue loss or that it wouldn't jump on this program in a minute once it's proved to work? The problem with revenue loss is everywhere and this would fix it. You so eager to bash California that you don't see the underlaying problem with the methodology? |

I'm saying that NM may be run by Democrats but it is far to the right of California and any politician over here who even mentioned this would be gone in the next election. California bashes itself very nicely with stuff like this, you all don't need my help. I absolutely agree with you this is Big Brother personified. I'm telling you that the people here would get their guns out and shoot the first politician that proposed it. I think California is so inured to big government they would let them get away with this. Dan |

Dan, You have great belief in your state, but I'm willing to bet that if the tech is proved effective that the tech would end up in NM in short order. It's all a matter of marketing, think of a terrorist connection. How do you know there isn't one of these on you car now? http://www.delorme.com/bluelogger/ |

Years ago we had the proposition to include the insurance in gas tax. Paying 5 polices for 2 drivers I was really looking forward to this, but it was killed. Just like the no-fault insurance proposition few year later. Bad coming to bad, we have few bridges, that take my FastTrack transponder, but at least we don't have to go Thur that every couple of miles like people in Florida, Chicago and few more. Than it is all in the cheese
