Lapdog Carried Off By Eagle Finds Way Home Associated Press Thursday, January 6, 2005 BOZEMAN, Montana -- A dog survived a flight in an eagle's claws then endured a week of sometimes subfreezing weather before finding its way home, a veterinarian said. "He was chilled, but he seemed to be able to walk," John McIlhattan said, referring to Freddie, a 13-year-old Pekingese mix. "He seemed remarkably chipper for what he'd gone through." Earlier in the day, Freddie showed up at home weighing about 3 pounds less than he did when he was last seen in a neighbor's driveway on Dec. 29. "We're all just amazed," said Jill Slevin, who said she hadn't found a way to tell her three children that Freddie probably wouldn't come back. "He's our miracle." Slevin, who was alerted to Freddie's return by the barking of her other dogs, said she put him on a blanket and carried him to McIlhattan. The veterinarian said he surmised Freddie had been snatched by an eagle after examining cuts around the dog's neck. Freddie had also suffered an eye injury and was covered by ice and insect bites. McIlhattan said the dog probably found a warm shelter, but had to share it with pests. "He's a pretty lucky dog to be getting home in this kind of weather," he said. http://sfgate.com/cgi-bin/article.cgi?f=/g...06/eagledog.DTL ![]() *** The article didn't say what kind of eagle it was, so I just looked up eagles: The female bald eagle is 35 to 37 inches, slightly larger than the male. With a wingspan which varies from 79 to 90 inches. The male bald eagle has a body length from 30 to 34 inches. The wingspan ranges from 72 to 85 inches. Bald eagles weigh from ten to fourteen pounds. Northern birds are significantly larger than their southern relatives. The golden eagle is larger than the bald eagle in average height and wingspan, but there isn't much difference in their average weight. *** Given that eagles can weigh 10-14 pounds, that is plausible that one of them could fly off with a Pekinese in its talons. The poor little thing must have been terrified. Sylvia |

I wonder how far away the poor little dog was carried! I'm always amazed to hear stories of animals that have been gone and found their way home. It's just incredible to me! It's amazing and heartwarming, the bond these animals have with us. Julie |

What amazed me the most about that story, was the dog was no Lassie. A Pekingese is a very small breed. And yet it knew where home was -- just like radar -- it found it. It was just a very endearing story. Sylvia |

Incredible Journey Sheila Burnford If you haven't read it, two dogs and a cat finding their way across a few hundred miles of northern Ontario. Burnford created the story from 'marks' on the three pets.

Amazing. I read that book too. Always up for a good, true animal story. |
