http://www.unknowncountry.com/news/?id=4377 If you have red hair, your ancestors may have been Neanderthals. British scientists think that the gene for red hair, and the freckles that come with it, is around 100,000 years old, and originated with Neanderthals. Whether or not they interbred with Homo Sapiens, who came along later, has always been controversial, but since the redhead gene is still around, this means that they did. Planetsave.com reports that Neanderthals have been characterized as being slow witted, but modern research shows this wasn’t true. They were aggressive fighters, however, and the fact that 10% of Scottish people have red hair and 40% carry the redhead gene may explain why they’ve been so tough to conquer. Neanderthals finally died out about 28,000 years ago. Redheads, as well as blondes, are gradually dying out, since their genes for hair color are not dominant. |

Jane, Yep and have a cousin who has red hair. It hasn't make an appearance since then. Skipped all the children of my generation and it looks like it is skipping all the children of the next generation. Daughter doesn't have it, her children neither as well as all her cousins. Knew that red hair was a recessive gene -- hoping it makes a reappearance sometime in our family again. Had the freckles too as a child and they faded -- they were barely distinguishable in my teens. Very white skin that is easily sun damaged. It wrinkles like you wouldn't believe--am on my way to looking like a well-used michelin tire and never ever sat in the sun (except as a child--the damage came from those years). So my ancestors were Neanderthals? Wonder what they did to protect themselves in those days? Maybe the really fair ones hunted in the evenings because I can't imagine them standing out in the sun for long periods! If they didn't, no wonder their time on earth was short! Sylvia |

My first husband had red hair and I have long been fascinated by the genetics involved. None of our five kids were redheads (though Rosalind, who had lustrous, long, thick wavy BLACK hair, has maybe one brilliant pure-copper strand per maybe 300. Amazing). None of the kids married redheads but three of my grandkids have bright red hair, as I believe was depicted in some family pictures on another thread awhile back. Evidently the gene skips a generation. |

No redheads in our family, but we do have some blondes. Hey, didn't we all come from Neanderthals anyway???

Heather, It has already skipped two generations in my family. Very elusive. Lots of blondes though in every generation is present! Some got the freckles too, but not heavily! Absolutely none have black hair and olive complexions. Kinda rules out milkmen in our family! Sylvia |

I don't have red hair, but think the red hair a fair complexion is downright beautiful. I never understood women wanting to roast themselves in the sun on purpose, though they look OK too. There's a lot of things I don't understand. One is the quest for skinnyness. Rick Steves was on one of his trips the other day on PBS channel and he was showing pictures of all this European art that has a bunch of well rounded normal healthy looking women in the pictures. I guess by todays standards others might consider these beauties as being plump. I consider it normal and really like it, actually prefer it. It would be no fun to go out to eat with a woman that eats a pea and a bread crumb and calls it quits. These skinny women scare me. I'd be afraid they'd starve to death in their sleep. |

My father was a redhead and so am I. I never liked the sun as a child so don't have many wrinkles. I like a cloudy day on the beach.I am a Norwegian Viking. They were determined and brave. Okay, they were a little mean too. |

Andrea, cloudy days on the beach can be just as damaging for the skin as a sunny day! You must just have good skin to begin with. Very lucky!!!
Being very fair myself, I didn't do the beach thing to much as I would just burn and peel, no fun in that. A few years ago I discovered the tanning booths! Now I know I can get quite a dark tan in there, but just never seem to find the time to go. Just as well, better for the wrinkle department that way. ![]() And jrf, I LOVE your thinking!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Jackie, a pharmacist told me to use Neutrogena brand "sensitve skin" sunblock. SPF is 30. She said put it on every day even under make up on a cloudy day. It is PABA free so is hypo allergnic. It is also oil free unlike regular sun screen. She said she wears hers every day even in the winter. I wear it spring, summer, and fall. She is in her fifties and had a beautiful complexion. (disgusting...) |

My experience with redheads (female variety), tempermental, but passionate. I like! Wonder if blonde hair is recessive, why do you see so many blondes? Could it be they are more popular as procreation partners? |
