The time is early morning. It is no longer night, but it is not yet day.
They have cooked a pot of soup using scraps of food that a near-by restaurant has thrown out. As it cooks, the smell of food brings the beggars to find something to satisfy their hunger. There are people of all ages, young and old.
A young brother and sister arrive in dirty, tattered clothing. Where did they spend the night? Where are their parents? In those days, before modern medical discoveries, many people died before their children were grown.
Probably these people own only the clothes they are wearing and nothing else. Most of the time they do not know where they will get their next meal. Without a way to make a living, they are dependent upon the charity of others.

This scene is repeated daily in many large cities everywhere in our rich North America.
Walk in front of me, you lead me,
Walk behind me, I lead you
Walk beside me, you are a friend.

Perhaps the humane thing to do would be to offer euthenasia.

How many would trade -18F under the bridge for that.

You'de be surprised Tom.
When it is very cold outside, (like tonight -25)) we have special busses running in some part of town to pick-up those who want to go to shelters here they could get a hot shower, a good meal and a warm bed.
Many prefer to stay outside under their cardboard hiding place with their dog. They are given a hot coffee and a few chocolate bars and they will survive.
Walk in front of me, you lead me,
Walk behind me, I lead you
Walk beside me, you are a friend.

Many are not able to cope mentally with leaving "their little world" to face a larger environment with many people.

Back at Christmas time in 1998 my wife had volunteered us to serve food at the local mission. Ist was one of those deals where the homeless could get a good meal and perhaps a coat for the price of listening to a sermon. Don't know if it was mandatory. My mother was in the hospital a few blocks away. We got real used to seeing some of our homeless friends hanging out around the hospital. I remember one in particular, who had the paper name tag and all waiting in the critical care waiting room, acting for all the world like he had a loved one there. I suspect the hospital employees were their accomplices on those cold nights.
