I keep several, that "somehow" accumulated over the years, but use basically Discover and AE, (with MC as a backup, whenever the others are not accepted).
One for business and one personal.
Both cards have cash back, what brings me several hundred dollars every year.
Having CC with high limit might be handy.
I used them once, to buy "new" motorhome, when the old one blow the engine in Ottawa.
Than few years later I've got a deal on the boat, that couldn't resist. The dealer selling the boat didn't want to accept the card for the % they would have to pay, but having a good deal, I offered them to cover the fee.

Anyone seen or used those self-cashouts at the grocery stores? My daughter and I used one with my dad while we visited at Xmas. Very interesting. Not a time saver for the purchaser but a real wage saver for the store. 6 checkouts and only 1 girl there to help out if you ran into problems.
I didn't see the prices to be any lower than the other stores with the wage overhead. Personally even if I were to save a few bucks checking myself out I'd rather pay the extra and get the cashier and bagger to do it. Heck, here they still ask if you'd like a hand out to your car.

They are real common around here (Michigan) in some of the Groceries + stores like Meijer and Walmart. Also at Home Depot (home improvement store). Sometimes they are faster, particularly if your using your credit card. And most places limit them to just a few items, like 12 or less.

I use my credit card mostly for on line purchases, rentals and things like that. I usually write checks. A while ago I thought I should go with the debit card instead of writing out checks. And, then I discovered that the merchant had to pay a processing fee on the debit cards, much like the credit cards, so on princeple decided against it. Although the courts have decided against it, I still think merchants should be allowed to give a discount for cash considering they get charged a percentage by the credit card company.

There's a new system here that's been operating for about 5 years I think, for small purchases. While most 'card' payments are done through Bancontact (draws money directly from your bank account, not credit) there are a few disadvantages to it. You usually need a minimum amount (about $12) as there is a transaction fee, and it takes time because you have to type a 4-digit code when making a payment. There is a new option now called 'Proton'. When you go to a self bank booth, you can transfer some funds onto a your Proton account, and when you go buy anything you can pay with your proton account using your regular bank card, without typing a code or payment fee.

Most people rarely have money on them anymore as the only people that continue using cash are tourists.

We have two cards that we use, and will soon transfer to one. (My Bloomies) Visa card gives me store money back after I charge a certain amount. I have a friend that charges everything on her credit card, even food. She gets frequent flier miles. I admit I don't always pay the balance in full.
