Does anyone purchase poinsettia plants for the holidays? I am on my way to the nursery to pick up 10 of them. They are so beautiful and bring the spirit of Christmas in and outside of the house.

Do you need to purchase them every year? Aren't they a perrenial? Don't they come back every year if you plant them in your garden? :dunno:

Yes, they are perrenials, we have planted some in the past. I like to put several on our front porch and inside the house. Poinsettias are susceptible to cold weather and several nights a year in Gainesville, Fl. we go below 30 degrees.

Can't grow them here without a greenhouse. I too love poinsettias. On Monday I bought a small white one the bracts of which retain some greenery. They now come in a wide range of colours--but my favourite remains the red ones. They can get to be rather expensive and have found it's possible to make a large display by buying smaller plants and massing them together. Walmart is a good source of reasonably-priced poinsettias.

Thanks for the pic Chrissy.

Sam's has some gorgeous pots of poinsettias right now....huge pots of them for $13.88....normally what they charge for a small pot.
Mom used to have them growing on the south side of her house in Del Rio, TX. They would freeze back, but come out again in the spring.

I'll get some after Thanksgiving. I like the red! ones and the pure white, but don't really like the pink, it doens't look Christmasy.
Though, I did buy a beautiful little Christmas cactus this week with pale pink and white flowers! Mom positively cooed over it!

I will try and take a picture with our digital camera of the front porch with all the poinsettia's. I have them for many months as I bring them in and out of the house depending on the weather. I also used to purchase them at Sam's Club but found this nursery last year and their prices are pretty reasonable for the size plant I buy.

Really lovely Chrissy. Hope you don't think I'm being over critical, but I lightened your pic a little and adjusted the contrast marginally so I could see the poinsettias a little better. Your house looks very inviting. Great-looking porch where I could sit with a mint julep in my hand and have all cares just drift away.

Having had the priviledge of sitting on the porch, I can honestly say that it is relaxing as it is beautiful.
Faster horses, younger women, older whiskey, more money...

Gorgeous picture of a gorgeous porch, Chrissy.
I still think of it as a "veranda"; too big to be called a porch. Lovely design.

Thanks everyone for the compliments on the house. We do enjoy the porch (veranda) we have our coffee in the mornings and an occasional drink in the evenings.
It took me awhile to figure out how to post the picture and then I was concerned it was going to be too big.

Sylvia,
Didn't mind at all making the photo lighter I thank you for it.
