Cost Of Divorce Going Up; new federal regs on 401K split up

I just read in the newspaper today, that financial institutions will now be allowed to charge significant fees (in the 10's of thousands) for handling the 401K split up in divorce cases. Just reaffirms what I discovered long ago. "It's cheaper to keep her".

sure just when I thought of getting one :( just my luck...

Just for the record, I don't believe in taking the other for all you can. I walked out with the most 2 valuable pieces I could ask for , my children. I wanted nothing more. I will shut up now.

hey I like this one cause I am still standing :box:

It's all those divorces in the red states I posted yesterday.

Careful with this one :punch:

Not, that I am really interested, but isn't legal separation another option?

One of the numerous things that I am grateful for, is that I know next to nothing about this subject.... next July will be 33 years, met her when she was near the end of Grade 10 (I was a bit older) - I wonder what the symbol for 33 years is?

My opinion is that the trend of couples being older when they marry has much to do with the divorce rate.
When I was young, most couples married intheir late teens or early twenties.
My wife turned nineteen the day before our wedding.
Now, older people are set intheir ways and much less forgiving of each others oddities:)
PS forty one years and counting.

We live in a highly mobile culture. Move residence, change jobs, experience the Internet. Little is permanent.

I'm a statistic! Actually twice!
Yup, my first divorce came about because the marriage should never have happened in the first place. That one cost me about $16000 in lawyer's fees back in 1986 because it was such a battle over everything.
Second one was in 98 and only cost about $100. My ex and I are still very good friends just not good marriage partners. We do many things together as a family including buying and picking out our own respective homes. We used the same lawyer for the sale of our mutual home and the purchase of our 2 seperate homes and our seperation all at the same time. We got a really good deal from him but that was because we had our ducks in a row before we went to see him.
We went to the bank together and divied up our investments, bank accounts, etc. Only got charged the normal service charge for changing names.
Divorce only has to be expensive if one wants to make it hard for the other spouse.
