Is there anyone besides a social conservative (religious right, political left) who is bothered by this? Ashcroft, Evans Resign, White House Says Mandate? For what? Tommy Thompson is waiting to talk to Bush first. His resignation would be regrettable. |

Glad Ashcroft is gone. Thompson wanted and still may want the Transportaion Secretary position. In a interview before we left, he kinda hedged saying he would continue at the "Pleasure of the president". He and W are very good friends but he couldn't deliver Wisconsin for him. I look for him to leave and come back to Wisconsin. He says he would like to run for governor again but I think he may run against Kohl who is up in a couple of years. He would be elected but wouldn't get my vote. He was somewhat dishonest in his run for governor the last time saying he would serve his term but didn't. A great local politician but his wife hates politics. She never even moved to Madison in the 3 terms he was gov. A survivor of breast cancer and a teacher, she is a pretty sharp lady. Enough for today. Chocolate and sex. Hmm. Do I have to make a choice? Are there almonds in the chocolate? |

Keep in mind, despite the rhetoric, Bush's record has been very if not extremely liberal. Why anyone thinks he will be born again politically is beyond me. From John Ashcroft, hero of religious right, quits administration "Before the election it had been widely rumoured that Mr Ashcroft - said to have something of a fractious relationship with the White House - would not serve in a second Bush term. But in the aftermath of the vote, in which evangelicals came out and supported the President like never before, there was speculation that Mr Ashcroft might be asked to stay on as some sort of payback to the religious right. "That has not happened. The White House spokesman Scott McClellan, said the President accepted Mr Ashcroft's resignation, along with that of the Commerce Secretary Donald Evans, who also announced his departure last night." |

Maybe Ascroft and Evans will start a third party. We can only hope. |

Richard Viguerie opposes Al Gonzales. Because he supports abortion rights and affirmative action.... Also: Some activists speculated that this would be the final strike against the possibility that Al Gonzales, the president's chief counsel, could be nominated for a Supreme Court slot should a vacancy arise. Conservatives have strongly opposed Mr. Gonzales for supporting abortion rights and saw his hand behind the Bush administration's decision not to come out entirely opposed to affirmative action in its filing before the Supreme Court. "I hope the muddled Supreme Court decision which followed the muddled Bush administration brief will end the muddled candidacy of Al Gonzales for a seat on the Supreme Court when an opening occurs," said former Republican Party presidential nomination contender Gary Bauer. |

From: http://www.straightdope.com/mailbag/mjoyce.html It is difficult to establish a plot in 'Finnegan' but there is a definite theme of rising and falling. The immediate analogy to this theme is seen in the title, an allusion to an old Irish song, "Tim Finnegan's Wake." In this song, Finnegan drunkenly falls from a ladder and dies. At his wake, which turns into a drunken fight, whiskey is mistakenly splashed on his body which brings him back to life. Buddy says: I see your point. Tim and Jr. meet up at Cheers.. Or is it. George is entering his revival period.? You’d be a bit off on that though Chris. The crusades started years ago.. Or is it like many perceive Tim... There is no rhyme nor reason for what George may be up to.. |

Simple is I'd read the ending in another thread and found myself back at the beginning source here. I quoted the last sentence of the book which is the first. |
