On the subject of flu vaccines that could become surplus to Canada, the following article speaks about choices Canada could face in the U.S shortfall becomes a major problem.

Quote:

By The Associated Press
TORONTO -- Canada's chief public health officer defended Friday the right of the country's flu vaccine manufacturer to sell surplus supply to the United States.

Dr. David Butler-Jones said ID Biomedical met all its commitments to the Canadian market before it sought to sell its surplus south of the border.

And Butler-Jones said that if it came down to a choice between vaccinating a healthy Canadian or an ailing, elderly American, the call would be an easy one.

What do you think his choice would be?
After all, his main function is to look after the health of Canadians.

As long as we can be reasonably assured that is a correct statement - I say RUSH IT THERE!

Dammit - these aren't just our neighbours - they're our best friends!

I already had my flu for the year.. Just got over it yesterday. It ain’t so bad..

Now that I don’t need mine anymore. I got my vaccine up on E-bay. Bidding started at 100 pecans...

He you Canucks. Maybe yous guys could creep me down some more of that vaccine stuff. Never hurts to squirrel away a little extra... :)

Personally I think it should go to the ailing elderly American, a healthy
Canadian can do just fine without it. This is shown by the fact that most healthy middleaged persons do not even get the shot.
Nationalities shouldn't matter, need should.
And yes, I am Canadian.

Wife and I care for 90 YO mother and it required standing in line for 3+ hours, Mom in car and wife and I hold place to get her a flu shot. Most of the people in line were in 60's and 70's very few elders because I guess they didn't have anyone to help. Hope the flu is mild this year or we will see a lot of 80-90 YO's die early. Wife passed on an option to get one as a care giver so some of the oldsters could get one.

The behavior about the vacine from Canada shows the level America politics has slid to, ideology is more important than reality. Wouldn't want to let in "tainted" vacine from that 3rd world country Canada because it would offend the big drug lobby.

As I've stated before, I don't want to get a flu vaccine and don't intend for my daughter to get one either; my ex has made the same decision.
Of my entire family, 2 parents in their 80s, 9 siblings, only my parents and one sister decided to get the shot. The sister works as a daycare provider and my parents, well that is a given with their age even though their health is good.
There are 10 shots that I know of in my family alone that could easily be sent to the States, or anywhere else for that matter, that could be used for whomever needs/wants them.
I wish it were my decision to do so and not some polititian's. This whole vaccine fiasco has made me sick (not literally). I wear rose coloured glasses at times and just wish that these situations didn't come up that put "us" against "them". Why can't we all just play nice?!? :dunno:

The question was.... what would his choice be?

The answer is:

Quote:

"A sick American versus a healthy Canadian? That's not very neighborly, as they say," Butler-Jones said. "No, question, I would give it to the American who's at high risk."

IMO, every Canadians would make the same choice without any hesitation.

Buddy;

Sometimes, on various Forums and in Newspaper articles, I read about the differences in our two countries. I may have even thrown a few digs in myself.

But it comes from being so close, "we can't see the forest for the trees".

If we step back once in a while, and look at ourselves as part of the whole world, it would be hard to find other countries whose values, issues, etc. match our own as often.

A guy named Martinez down here in FL is running for US Senate and keeps saying that old people should be able to get low priced drugs from Canada; I keep thinking they should be able to get low priced drugs from the US.
