Why The Elephant Is The Gop Symbol

As I consider myself an equal opportunity agitator, I was browsing thru some websites and stumbled onto some giving the history of the Republican Party. I knew, being from Wisconsin, that Ripon, Wi. was considered to the the place where the party was founded basically by abolishionists. I also thought that the GOP term was what most people think was Grand Old Party but found that it probably meant Gallant Old Party. I knew the elephant was a symbol for the party but not why. It has been credited to a cartoonist name Thomas Nast who also is credited for the donkey symbol of the Democratic Party. The elephant was selected because it was considered, clever, steadfast, easily controlled but unmanageable when frightened. I probably would term them sneaky, bull headed, easily manipulated and scared s***less. :poke:

On the way to work today a cement truck had veered off the road and rolled over into the ditch.

It looked like an elephant laying there unable to get up.

My grandmother told me that if I lied my nose would grow long like an elephants. Does this mean the republicans lie.

 I'm so embarrassed. You made me realize my gramatical error. It's not laying, it's lying.

I didn't pick that up - well, I couldn't have any way :)

Won't even tell you how old I was when I figured out why the mixer part of cement trucks was always revolving - but it was only about four years ago :(
My husband just looked at me funny when I made that great announcement.

I'm surprised that no one has picked up on Thomas Nast, the cartoonists. Does anyone know what other symbol he is credited with?

He created the modern day Santa Claus in 1862 and it was first published in the Harpers Weekly.
