380 tons is one thing, but if you think of it as 760,000 suicide belts it takes on a whole new meaning. If only one in ten make it through to a target you still have a devastating potential. War on the cheap?????????? I guess we now know some of the hidden costs. |

I was just looking through the threads to see if anyone had posted about this yet - you beat me to it again, corky.
WTH is going on, when you can "lose" over 3/4 of a million POUNDS of high explosives??? This is not something you can just toss in the back of your station wagon, and slip off in the dead of night! I mean THINK ABOUT IT! Even with a semi-trailer, with a GVW of 60,000 lbs - this is well over A DOZEN TRUCKLOADS! Never mind how the Hell you load them in the first place!!!

Heard about this but it's confusing. Was it ours to lose, or was this captured Iraqi explosives? These are the types of explosives used in a couple terroist attacks. The NYT reported it. The source is the Iraqi govt? Our Administration knew 10 days ago? Bremer was warned as much as a years ago? |

Here's a link to Reuters. How could we not secure 377 TONS of explosives? Not too bright. That's a lot of explosives... |

From what I read, "Before the war, inspectors with the Vienna-based International Atomic Energy Agency had kept tabs on the so-called “dual use” explosives because they could have been used to detonate a nuclear weapon." Now they say what amounted to a munitions dump was never guarded. They don't really have any idea when the explosives were taken. That is insane to not guard it, or at a minimum destroy it so it didn't slip into the hands of insurgents or anyone else. It was literally lost! BTW, it would take 40 trucks not a dozen to move it. Couple all this with the dual use equipment for nuclear weapons that is missing and think it most likely spells IRAN! The reason this particular depot was important is that the explosives it held were easily adaptable for use in trigger mechanisms of nuclear weapons, while actually being harder and more dangerous to use for terrorist applications. This type of explosive is one of the things that is controlled to stop the spread of nuclear weapons. So which is worse in the hands of Iran or the hands of terrorists? GWB and crew try to run cheap and politically correct once more, once more the American people take it in the neck. |

Pentax: Iraq is on the metric system. So what was reported were probably metric tons.   Now, do we convert metric tons to short tons or long tons??? Do you really think Iraqi trucks can carry 60,000lbs. This one tried: Bottom line, somebody forgot to lock the door when he left. What a mess. JackD |

I can't get that excited. First because it is entirely possible the explosives were moved between the time the inspectors left Iran (remember... Sadam threw them out well before the war.) and the time our troops reached the area. We know an awful lot of stuff was being moved around at the time, and there were plenty of pictures showing activity at those type of sites before the war that we all saw on television. Besides, as is noted in the article, there were over 10,000 such sites to be checked out. I think they said on television this evening that we have already located more than 400,000 thousand tons of explosives in the country. With those kinds of numbers to deal with, 377 tons sounds like pretty small potatoes. Chances are, it went to Iran or Syria before the war even started. Realistically, we may not have a cop on every corner, but even the Iranians couldn't move that many truck loads around the country without running into a roadblock. It sounds to me like one more attempt by the New York Times to come up with a sensational story that will discredit Bush and the war. The drunk driving story didn't work four years ago. CBS got caught with it's pants down a couple of weeks ago, let's throw this one up against the wall and see if it sticks. |

What I remember hearing, we never did secure them despite numerous warnings to the Administration here and there to do so. The story Pat links to--not the Times--says they were monitored right up to invasion by the IAEA. And if it sticks to the wall? |

Just listening to CNN - The UN Inspectors told the US Administration right where the stuff was , and roughly how much. They were blown off with: "We know what we're doing... Forget about it." I guess Admin took their own advice...

Paul, Even if we didn't have enough troops to secure it what would have been the problem with a couple of precision-guided missles? Not sure how far it was from any civilization, but if the administration was amply warned it should have been secured someway or another so it didn't fall into the wrong hands. It wasn't even something like WMD's that we had to search for and didn't find either...oh wait we were supposed to have known where those were too..... |

Well, here is your answer per NBC News. The explosives were missing when our troops arived at the site on the day after the war ended. They should know, they had reporters with the first troops to arrive at the site. Just as I suspected, the New York Times wrote the story to make it look like Bush screwed up. Guess they think all is fair during a campaign when your guy is behind! NBC Reports |
