“I am angry that so many sons of the powerful and well placed and many professional athletes (who were probably healthier than any of us) managed to wangle slots in Reserve and National Guard units. Of the many tragedies of Vietnam, this raw class discrimination strikes me as the most damaging to the ideal that all Americans are created equal and owe equal allegiance to our country." Colin Powell, in his autobiography, "My American Journey." I wonder how Powell feels now? Caught between supporting his boss and the truth of his feelings, the above quote really puts GWB’s Guard time in true perspective. |

A great American. Doing what he can to serve his country. I'll bet he has some very conflicting emotions regarding his boss. |

Powell and Rice are the only two in the "inner circle" that I have respect for. I used to think they could both use some smiling lessons - but, sailing on that Ship of Fools, I guess it would be pretty tough to find a reason to.... |

If Bush wins I expect that Powell will be given hos walking papers. He has said too many STUPID things like don't invade Iraq without an exit plan and we really do need allies in the War On Terror. Ken Auburn Ca. |

Yes, such stupid things!
Powell, yes, I think he stands tall. Rice, not so sure anymore. |

You people just don't get it!!!!!!!!!! This statement goes to the heart of the problem with GWB's TANG service, not Powell's situation currently. Here are better words than I can come up with about why what GWB did was wrong from a contemporary who served at the time. Forget his current position and look at them as words of a man who lived thru the times. |

Easy, corky - the conversation just drifted to the author, rather than the statement. |

It appears that Powell is more of a statesman than a politician. Not a smart thing to be in the politicing business today. Probably could have been our first non white president had he chosen the blues rather than the reds. Now, I don't know. He, even though he has stayed a bit out of step with the current administration, will still be associated with it and in my opinion that is not a plus. However there is a precident for the affluent avoiding military service. The War between the states was an example and many commissions were purchased. Powell is gone no matter who wins. (darn it is hard to type listening to polkas!

Authors. Corky, could be people understand that and are thinking what could be better, or, in Ken's prediction, worse. |

Corky, I understand what you are saying, as one of those idiots that "supported" VN even when I was briefly 1A, it galled me to see those with connections not taking the same chance with the draft board that I did. On the other hand the world has always worked that way, even in America, and as long as they stayed within the limits of the law........... |

America is all about challenging the way thing "usually work" when it's unfair and wrong. Laws can change and unfairness be brought to light! We didn't have the buyout and replacement rules this time around, danger avoidance had to be less overt than it was earlier. Just have to keep the spot light on the abuses. |

Corky I would hope that we still are that aware of our right to protest unfair or unjust acts but it seems that some just let things ride. When I recently asked about the date of the Board of Review for our property tax levy, several people had never heard of such a thing. People are just accepting whatever is happening and the politicians are doing pretty much as they please. We have an ongoing attempt for a gaming establishment that has been thru a referendum, passing with 85% of the vote and our local state officials, who are against the proposal, have decided they know better than the local people. They both may go this fall. People get discouraged when none of their wishes or complaints get listened to. And less than 50% of the population votes!

There is a good chance that Colin Powell and Condy Rice (if they were Democrats) would be shouting their comments in from the cotton fields if Gore would have been President. We'll have to see how many black Americans are part of the "very inner circle" if Senator Kerry wins the election. I don't mean a token black like Brown in the Clinton administration. I mean a black as a very improtant member of the inner circle. |
