Just in Case people start thinking our Conservative government is perfect, it isn't. Why just a day or two ago, Pat Nelson, our Fuzzy headed Blonde Finance Minister, had to admit she'd made a mistake in her last estimate of Alberta's surplus - it'll be 4 or 5 Billion higher...
***** Darn! ***** On Edit: Pat must be the only woman in the world who can't spend all of her money - and then some!

She should be fired for not having done the job as planned
I hope things will continue in that good vain for Alberta. Who knows, it could possibly spill over to other provinces. jackD |

Speaking of honey bees, Albertans might consider investing some time, energy and funds trying to bring the ailing honey bees back to good health. |

Hmmm, too bad I didn't know about that sooner, or I'd have added it to my survey... I like Honey!

A couple of thoughts. Fossil fuel is basically a non renewable resource. Pulp wood is renewable but not real fast. Alternative energy, wind power, hydrogen, and the like seem like a good option. Start working on an immigration policy. If we native Americans (they called us Indians) had a better one in the 15th century, we might be better off.
No taxes, women did most of the work, man hunted, fished, smoked his tobacco and they tried to civilize US.

Olstuf, I think you're onto something.... We already have a massive immigration flow, mostly eastern Canadians, but I could see it spreading... :ph43r: I hope we have better luck than your people did! One thing that I'm concerned about - a lot of those immigrants come from liberal/socialist dominated areas of Canada, and their attitudes, at least at first, do not fit with what is happening here. It takes years 'till they "See the Light." Some of the survey results could be quite skewed. We are already hearing the "If we're such a rich province, why don't we" - followed by a laundry list of massive social service programs. Ralph has an election coming up in November, and I don't think he'll see the 70%+ popular vote / 90% of all seats majority he's won in some of the last elections. |

Man, brewster - if I had known that my tip of the hat to Ralphie this morning was going to result in this Self-backslapping exercise..... I'd have stuck my tongue out!

I DO have one idea, though.... how about sponsoring a Driver Re-Education course for all Alberta drivers, one that concentrates on the more technically difficult concepts like 1) Negotiating a Curve on a Mountain Road and 2) "Speed Limits - What are They and What do They Mean?" It would have to be taught by a small army of British Columbians, of course, but we have some spare time out here....   |

Is that the same bunch of British Columbians that we have to remind: "Just because there's no mountains in the way doesn't mean you can drive straight across country!"???
 Or the ones that have to be taught that when the Humidity drops below 95%, they won't immediately turn to prunes? Or that it's the Vancouver side that's beyond Hope, not the Calgary side? Or that the white stuff on the roads is snow, not free hashish from the friendly Klein government? |

I'll merely repeat what Jack has said, diversify, diversify, diversify. Hope the residents of Alberta reap some of the profits rather than the politicians. That would go down in the history books! Sylvia |

So Far, So Good, Sylley. There are plans to make Medical and Pharmaceutical Care free to seniors (Yes, American friends, in Canada it is possible to be a Conservative and in favour of Universal Health Care), Education has already got a big boost, and a lot of money is going into Alternate Energy, in particular Wind Power research and development. And I DO like that his government is actually asking us what to do. My main concern is that King Ralph has stated that he's only staying around another year or so. (He wants to preside over Alberta's centennial in 2005.) When I look at his potential replacements, my confidence level sinks somewhat... |

Brewster, I had another idea. Why doesn't the government just give the surplus back to the people, it is their money. Now that would be tryly conservative. |

Oh, Chris, Chris, Chris - I had so much hope for you...
 You're confusing Libertarianism with Conservatism... They are close, but... Libertarians would like to believe that if the government stays out of the way, all will be well. Conservatives know life isn't that simple.... One more Ralph Klein Quote:
Giving the money back follows strict Conservative/Libertarian Ideals, but we need a plan that will give us a continuing leadership in the future. B) |

Look at it this way, Chris - do you strive for an income that will allow you to pay for your day-to-day needs and thats all? Or do you strive for an income that allows you to stash some away for future projects, or unforseen difficulties? Funny how when one person does it, its called "saving" and thats good - but when a government does it, its called a "surplus" and thats bad.

brewster, am I confusing "strict Conservative/Libertarian Ideals"? Hmmmm. Mur, no, government creating a surplus is a good thing, individuals saving or investing what is afterall theirs a better thing. Now where's that quote by Alexis de Tocqueville about how the American Republic will fail.... |
