Bring Back The Rhinoceros Party!; The Best Idea Quebec Ever Had!

As I watch the US struggle with the upcoming election, and remember the lies spouted by our own leaders in our election just a few months ago, (Prime Minister Martin is already in the process of backing out of Health care promises, etc.) I really feel both countries need a better way.

Quite a few years ago now, Quebecers set up a "Rhinoceros Party" a joke party that really didn't want to be elected, and spent the entire campaign as stand up comedians.

As an Idea of some of their platforms:

One fellow went so far as to build his platform while in the middle of a debate - his hammering and sawing drowned out all the nonsense the other candidates were spewing.

Another was going to solve Canada's transportation problems by flattening the Rocky Mountains, making a nice gentle slope all the way to Toronto. Transport costs going east (That's where all the goodies go anyway) would be much reduced.

When a self styled leader of the party (there were usually about ten each election) was asked why people should vote for their party, he said that their candidates were the only ones who knew they were clowns, which made then the smartest of the bunch!

The worse the real candidates got, the better Rhino party did, and after several elections they were running candidates in nearly every riding in all of Canada! (Up to three candidates in some ridings!)

This was a major embarrassment to the major parties, and when one Rhino came within a whisker of winning (When he realized how close he was, he demanded a recount, before the original count was even finished!) Parliament put in rules making it much more difficult to run a joke campaign. But, for little while, the candidates got a little better.

But, somehow we need a way to show our disgust!

That was good. :D

We once had Pat Paulson (follow link to some editorials). But he's gone.

So, yes, need a new way.

Any of my fellow Canadians remember any more Rhino Platform items?

It occurs to me it would be a great collection to have, and sometimes I wonder if any of their ideas ever made it - Lord Knows we have enough loony laws to go around...

Loonies - were the Rhinos responsible for our money???

Do you remember that they promised to repeal the Law of Gravity, as it was holding a lot of ambitious Canadians down?

From Rhinoceros Party of Canada:

Platform promises released by the Rhinoceros Party included:

* repealing the law of gravity,
* paving the province of Manitoba Manitoba to create the world's largest parking lot
* instituting illiteracy as Canada's third official language
* tearing down the Rocky Mountains so that Albertans could see the sunset
* building sloping bicycle paths across the country so that Canadians could "coast from coast to coast",
* annexing the United States, which would take its place as the third territory (after the Yukon and North-West Territories) in Canada's backyard, in order to raise the average national temperature
* making bubble gum the national currency, so that it could be inflated or deflated at will,
* breeding a mosquito that would only hatch in January so that "the little buggers will freeze to death"
* turning Montreal's rue Ste-Catherine into the world's longest bowling alley
* selling the Canadian Senate at an antique auction in California
* painting Canada's coastal sea limits so that Canadian fish would know where they were at all times,
* counting the Thousand Islands to make sure none were missing
* banning lousy Canadian winters.
Politics is the art of achieving the maximum amount of freedom for individuals that is consistent with the maintenance of social order.

I could get into this idea.
Bill, Rita and Chloe the Terror Cat

For having lived long, I have experienced many instances of being obliged, by better information or fuller consideration, to change opinions, even on important subjects, which I once thought right but found to be otherwise.
