'morning Folks,

I have become a big fan of El Nino! Instead of 18 inches of snow outside this morning, the ground is wet, and the rain keeps coming. This would have been a major winter storm, had the temperature been lower, with snowfall accumulations of two feet or more!

The consensus on manual registration to prevent/reduce spam seems to be: use manual registration. This process causes a delay between the time when a new member registers, and when that member can post messages, but it also requires new members to send an email to the Admin with a few words about themselves. I belong to a few Yahoo Groups that had that requirement when I joined, and I was never sure exactly what kind of info they wanted, or why they wanted it. Hopefully the validation email will be clear on that if this procedure is implemented at CS.

"The Fabric of the Cosmos: Space, Time,..." is still on the reading list. I will be a few more days before I get through this one. The math is optional, but I don't like to skip anything.

Youz guys have a nice day,

JM

Good morning, all,

We got into the 70's yesterday! Amazingly warm weather even for Atlanta in January. A long, all-day soaking rain and some strong storms passing through the area made it interesting. But it's more seasonal this morning - was 44 degrees when I got up - and the sun's shining.

Have been spending the last few days pruning my image collection. Started with more than 15,000 pictures in the database, but have cut it down to just under 13,000 and would really like to whack that back by another 4 or 5 thousand. I used to save every image captured, but have become far more critical and am now paying the price for my earlier hoarding! It's not just a matter of looking at a photo and deciding whether to keep it or not - it gets interesting when the photo is one of a string of 20 or more taken of the same subject. Lots of back and forth deciding which of the bunch is the best and worth keeping.

And I still haven't pulled the trigger on the new computer. Decided not to buy a Dell XPS machine and have been researching and pricing components on Newegg. It's been years since I built my last machine from components and the selection is a bit overwhelming these days. Just deciding which case to put everything in can be an all day researching job.

Right now I'm looking at the following configuration:

Intel E6400 Core 2 Duo CPU
Asus P5B - Deluxe mother board
2 gigs of Corsair XMS Memory
1 Pair of WD Caviar 320 GB drives
Gigabyte 7600 video board with 256 MB of RAM
Smilodon case with 500w power supply and cooling fans out the wazoo
19" Samsung wide screen monitor

Total with shipping would be $1265.72 and about $85 worth of mail-in rebates (and we all know how useful those can be!)

Now I just have to hit the Order button.

DAMN, that's cheap ! Seems like the drive size (along with an extra external for backup) would be OK for your requirements. The 2 GBs of memory is also a must these days for any "serious" uses. ONE GB is OK for MOST applications but when you're downloading some files while working in Photoshop and on a video (especially) it's apparent that it isn't enough anymore. It's absolutely AMAZING what you can get for such a little amount these days ! Sounds good ! Even though I'm not that bad off with MY system (except I've given up archiving old videos I really WANT TO) seeing this makes me feel the time will soon come to get another desktop. The laptop will last a few more years since I bought it fully loaded within the last year. STILL, it was close to 3 grand and I cut corners !

Yeah, it's pretty incredible what a grand will buy in hardware these days, isn't it?

My first computer - a TRS-80 Mod I with 2 MHZ Z80, 48k of RAM and a pair of 35 tk ss-sd floppies was a whole bunch more than that and that was in 1979 dollars! The first box of 5.25 floppies cost $4 a disk and we used to punch out the write protect notch and hole for the drive LED in order to convert the single sided disks into "flippies."

I have a couple TRS-80 emulators that I'll fire up every now and then and convert this Pentium into a NewDos-80 based Z-80 and marvel at how far we've come in the last 25 years.

And there are people who call 'em "The good old days!" They wouldn't say that if they ever tried to load a program off a cassette tape.

Just pressed the Confirm Order button at Newegg and the stuff should be here in a week or less. I'll y'all know how the build progresses.

Way to go, Eric!

I'm waiting until my card cycles on the 17th, then I'll start looking again myself. That build it yourself idea looked good to me at first (how hard can it be). Then I though about formatting the drives and adding the OS, so that idea came and went...

Maybe you'll get lucky and have it by the end of the week!

John,

It's a lot easier with new build than it used to be. The drives should be preformatted and all you do is stick the O/S distribution disk into the drive and off you go.

Or so he says.... I'll let you know how it REALLY goes after the hardware gets here. The one thing you mentioned and I realized I didn't order - a CD drive! I might have to head up to Fry's and pick one up before the stuff gets here. The machine's not much good without a CD and operating system loaded from it.

Actually, I'll probably just pull the CD/RW and DVD/RW drives out of the machine the new one is replacing. That old machine will replace the ancient 600 MHz 'puter I run as my backup host and download box. The 600 MHz'er is getting put out to pasture for a good rest - it's been running 24/7 for the last 7 or 8 years (it was originally loaded with Win 98) and not a single hardware problem.
