'morning Folks,

Another late night-early morning for me, so I'll get the day started here now. The first order of business is a question Chris asked yesterday about spam and preventing spam:

Quote:

Let me ask you all a question. It's related to spam. Now I thought the spammers would stop after Christmas but it's only growing worse. I'm guessing but I think we're deleting 2 or 3 spam posts a day, and 5 or 6 spammers or potential ones a day.

Right now we operate under a policy of automated registration. Someone comes along, registers, the forum software sends an email with a link back here that must be read and clicked to validate registration. That blocks automated spammers, because they will not check email and confirm, but what we're seeing is real, live idiots who will. But they do this within a time frame of about 10 minutes, and then never return.

So what I propose is a change in policy whereby validation is done manually. When someone registers I will send them an email requesting they respond and say a few words about themselves. This would extend the time frame to at least an hour and perhaps a day.

The risk of course is frustrating someone who does want to join the forum.

Anyway, that's my proposal. Can I get some feedback?

I haven't posted my comments on this yet, but I'll get around to it soon.

Yous guys have a nice day,

JM

Change for the right reasons is fine. And, look, I've changed, I'm asking you the members before making the change!

Keeping this together, yesterday Eric commented: "Sounds like a plan to me, Chris. If meeting that requirement is too much work for someone, I doubt they'd be an active and interesting participant to the forum."
