So...Lou, my brother-in-law, will be celebrating his 60th birthday next year. We celebrated mine in June with a trip to Niagara Falls and Canada. His wife asked him where he'd like to spend his.

His response was "On a cruise between Vienna and Budapest on the Danube."

This didn't exactly come out of left field because Lou is Hungarian and has been to Central Europe many years ago.

The question: has anyone done one of the Danube cruises and, if so, would you care to share your experiences?

Danube cruise? Never have hear about.
But Budapest is beautiful city and I don't think I need to talk about Vienna?
My father took cruise on Russian rivers few years back and liked it. With unsettled hotel base in post-communistic countries it might be safer this way.
But the distance is like 1/2 day of driving. How long the ship can cruise?

Kaj,

There are, apparently, many river cruises in Central Europe. One we are looking at goes from Budapest to Nuremberg - 8 days and 7 nights.

I've seen Russian river cruises as well and the 10 day St. Peterburg to Moscow sounds like something we'd enjoy.
