http://www.biketcba.org/DALMAC/2006/Text.html I'm heading out in the morning for the annual Labor Day Weekend bicycle ride from Lansing to Mackinaw. Four days, and approximately 65 to 70 miles each day. This will be the 12th or so for me. Wished I had trained more. My last training ride was a couple of weeks ago (70 mi). And, since have been camping with the grand kids and the DW. Hopefully my 64 year old body won't let me down. Will probably need a generous amount of Ibruprofen for the aches and pains. I'll be tent camping, which I haven't done in a while. I always think of a quote attributed to the late Rep. Claude Pepper: "Life is like riding a bicycle, you don't fall off until you stop peddaling". |

Just coast a lot and don't try to break any of your youthful records. Be the tortoise and not the hare. You'll make it. But..... keep the Ibuprofen handy, chances are you'll still need it for butt pain by day four. Good luck. |

good for you Tom.
I used to live in Sarnia and we would go over to Port Huron and party along the Black River on the boats. I have been to Mackinaw a few times. I will be thinking of you on that hi-way and bridge.Very proud |

Well, I made it. I've done perhaps 12 previously. But, it seems to get harder every year. I did use the Ibruprofin a bit for aches and pains. Wishing I had taken the time to train more, and didn't have those extra lbs to carry up the hills. There were a couple that it took everything I could muster not to stop on. Just kept chugging away in my lowest gear just fast enough to not fall over until I crested the top. Fortunately the weather was good (no rain). Unfortunately we had a headwind most days. I didn't cross the bridge, although I have several times before. Just had the DW pick me up in Mackinaw City on Sunday 9/3. The first day was the worst, got into leg cramps at 35 miles, got off course and had the chain come off too. That was a 14.4 mph average day, the rest were 15-16 mph average. Not, like a few years ago when I could leave late and get in before most everyone. Went to the bar with the buds the second night. And, ended up with about 4 hours sleep and a hangover. Didn't use to bother me much, but day three was a bit of a struggle. Thinking of switching to one of those recumbant style bikes, where you sit in a hammock like seat, with your legs out in front of you. The guys I talked to that had them, said they were the cure for the sore butt syndrome. |

"Went to the bar with the buds the second night. And, ended up with about 4 hours sleep and a hangover" Doesn't that build up testosterone? Congrats! |

I definitely could probably use a little more of that a my age. I still like to look, but I think it's more asthetic appreciation than lustful these days. I took one of those throw away cameras and took one picture. At the bar of course. When I get around to shooting the rest up, I'll try to figure out how to post the pic. |
