Demanding rights for great apes By Jason Webb Tue Jun 27, 2006 MADRID (Reuters) - Spain's parliament is to declare support for rights to life and freedom for great apes on Wednesday, apparently the first time any national legislature will have recognized such rights for non-humans. Parliament is to ask the government to adhere to the Great Ape Project, which would mean recognizing that our closest genetic relatives should be part of a "community of equals" with humans, supporters of the resolution said. I love virtually all animals (not too crazy about things like flies etc.) but if THIS doesn't illustrate the ultimate irony. Most people I sent this article to came back to answer it with the same sentiment. If they want to expand protection why don't they start with saving all the unborn babies destroyed by abortion each year. It reminds me of a situation I observed in anatomy when I was in college about 10 years ago. We were dissecting cats and one of them turned out to be a pregnant female. The class was almost all female and they all gathered around complaining how horrible it was to use a cat that was pregnant. They said it should have been allowed to give birth before it was euthanized as they cradled each unborn feline in their hands. Some even spoke of organizing protests ! I thought sadly of how many of these same people have already had an abortion. If I were to translate what I observed here firsthand it would be quite logical to infer that most people value animals more than they do people. A very sad society we live in ! |

"Humans have Rights". I know they SHOULD but probably a majority of people will argue that this goal hasn't been fully realized in the world. |

Rights are natural, or, some say, God-given. Property, conscience, pursuit of happiness and so on, they are protected here constitutionally. Granted, other areas of the world, dominated by dictators, monarchies and theocracies fair much worse. |

Rights were also protected by the constitution drafted by the former U.S.S.R. If you were to read it you would say without hesitation that the people living there had rights that far surpassed what we have here. Now, allow me to ask, "Did they REALLY have decent rights over there" ? Of course not; the same is true for communist China. Our constitution is NOT being upheld honestly. The first amendment right to free speech only protects sanctioned speech. Say something politically incorrect and you will lose everything you hold dear. The part that was meant to PROTECT religion has been convoluted to a point where it is now used to RESTRICT the free expression of religion in the public square. Forget about how the SECOND amendment has been trashed.Add the joke that says we are presumed innocent until proven guilty. How can this be when newspapers print the names of people who have only been CHARGED with a crime. Even when they are found innocent their reputations are ruined for life along with their innocent family members. What about the court costs or the time put in a damn jail while awaiting trial ? Yeah; innocent until proven guilty . . . tell me ANOTHER one ! |

I'll agree our government doesn't restrict itself according to the constitution, big government liberalism a joke, and big government conservatism an even bigger one. |

The Constitution was designed and written by men of decent character at it's origin and for the good of the people and the nation. It's been interpreted for selfish purposes by folks of less and lesser character; not unlike Christianity and Islam from it's origin. |
