I read of this in the Vancouver papers over the weekend but I was out at the lake; I'm embarrassed to say I had not learned of this in school. It should be required.

Observances were held in Canada and France, to commemorate those many who died 90 years ago - July 1, 1916. The Newfoundland Regiment was nearly wiped out in the fruitless trench-warfare attack, never advancing more than a few hundred yards over what today is just pastoral fields on farms. I have just finished watching a special on the CBC recognizing the sacrifices of so many, including Newfoundland, which was still a "colonial" possession of Britain until 1949.

One of the articles contained a fact that I found absolutely CHILLING:

Of the nearly 800 N.R. men and officers who attacked the Germans on that morning, only 68 were able to respond to roll call the NEXT MORNING.... God rest them all.

Mur, look at Campfire.

She who resides in Newfoundland, posted on this topic on the 90th Anniversary of that Battle.

July 1, 1916

She from NL, CA thought that was the best place to honour this place and it's special identity.

The owner noticed. He even looked up the different name for the holiday, but he hasn't learned to say:

. We have some more training to do.

But thank you for paying attention.

The hazards of "catching-up" vs. "something-on-my-mind", when one has been away for a while... sorry.
Good stuff, that you observed it before I did.

Well, you're welcome, I guess - but I should point out that I don't consider Nfld. and Labrador as separate entities - perhaps incorrectly. But it DOES, (in my mind) approach "Political Correctness", which is becoming somewhat tiresome to this particular Canadian..... shall we start saying "B.C. and Vancouver Island"?

puh-leeze..... :faint:

Mur,

The official name is Newfoundland and Labrador.

The postal abbreviation has been NL for the same reason for 4 or 5 years now.

BTW @ mapquest put in Corner Brook, NL. Bring it up. Then look carefully at the name of the Body of Water/name of the Bay. I've followed the contact us feature. That was in early spring. No answer yet. No correction yet either. Have you got the energy to complain, too?

Isn't that priceless?

Must be getting late for me - that one lost me entirely.

I'm off to bed. :tiphat:

Mur,

The official name is Newfoundland and Labrador.

Yes, okay, I realize that.... but it's a "mittfull" to type - please consider me to mean BOTH when I say the one.

(Besides, I have to wonder if it isn't a bit of "one-upsmanship" to have THREE words in one's title, so as to top the two-worders, like British Columbia, New Brunswick and Nova Scotia....) and you're WAY bigger than Prince Edward Island!)

Those Newfoundlanders were brave.

War to end all wars, wasn't it?

Good afternoon, all,

As a bit of a WWI and WWII buff, I'm always on the lookout for monuments and momentos of the wars. On our visit to Stratford, Ontario last month we visited the Stratford Normal School (now converted to a museum) where the window shown below was dedicated to the students and teachers of the School who gave their lives in The Great War.

You can see the names of the greatest battles fought in WWI - Somme, Amiens, Passchendaele, Mons...etc.

I doubt if any political unit gave as much of it's self.

The end result was that the 'dominion' of Newfoundland and Labrador couldn't survive the depression because of the debt from World War I. The appeal to England for help resulted in the loss of democracy with the Commision of Government. Of course, after World War II Great Britain was in heavy debt and went looking for a way to move NL along. Hence Canada. The first vote was divided 3 ways and had very close results all around. In the second vote the Canada option won by 50.? percent and the 'remain ourselves' side lost with 49.? %.

To say the least since Newfoundland and Labrador joined Canada Apri 1, 1949, there are people around today who firmly believe that the wrong side won.

The Ferry was supposed to be part of the Trans Canada Highway. It's the most expensive 90 miles!!!!
