The two 500-pound bombs dropped on the house where Mr. Zarqawi was staying north of Baghdad killed five other people instantly, two men and three women, said Maj. Gen. William Caldwell, the American military spokesman here.

When Iraqi police officers entered the ruins ahead of the American soldiers, they found Mr. Zarqawi badly wounded but still alive. The Iraqis strapped him to a gurney, General Caldwell said.

American soldiers arrived almost immediately thereafter and quickly identified Mr. Zarqawi, the most hunted man in Iraq, by his scars and tattoos, General Caldwell said. Mr. Zarqawi tried to turn away and roll off the stretcher, the general said, and the American soldiers strapped him back on.

I'm surprised this hasn't come up yet. A major kill, although we are not to be deluded into thinking it is over. The man personally beheaded at least two innocent people, and was responsible for killing many Iraqi civilians and US military. I'm confident if there is a hereafter, he will be enjoying his virgins in an eternal fire of damnation for his heinious acts. To bad we didn't execute Sadam when we had the chance, which would further taken the fire out of the insurgents support.

Well, he got his 72 virgins. Only thing is, they are all male homosexuals, and he is the recipient for eternity! Fry in hell forever!

You can put things so "tactfully" sometimes, Chris. I plead Guilty to being caught up in the moment. ;)

It is sad but the "enemy" believe that every American soldier killed takes the fast road to hell. Wars over race and religion are the most brutal. I hope that this makes a difference but we have "turned the corner" many times in the past...

Bush has stated taking out leaders is not the goal, because it will have little effect againt terrorist organizations of loose independent cells--of no organization at all. Yet this is now hailed as a great victory?

False Dawn?

...It would be a relief to think that by killing a single man we could end the reign of terror in Iraq, or, for that matter, in the world. We would love to believe that by finally getting our hands on Osama bin Laden that we could end the nightmare that began on 9/11.

Yet behind this thinking lurks a fantasy -- the same fantasy, it should be noted, that preoccupies the minds of dedicated conspiracy nuts -- the fantasy that somewhere someone is in control of everything. In this case, the fantasy that al-Zarqawi was in control of terror in Iraq gives birth to the hope that with his death, the terror will end, or, at least, begin to diminish....

Unless we can come to understand the logic of fanaticism, despite all its alien and repugnant qualities in our eyes, we will continue to see rays of hope in the Middle East where there are none....

There have been too many false dawns in Iraq already. Let us at least wait a while this time before we start to crow.
