Mon, June 5, 2006 Vigilantism discouragedUPDATED: 2006-06-05 17:41:35 MST Falconridge residents take action By PABLO FERNANDEZ, CALGARY SUN Windows are being barred and citizens taking the law into their own hands as the community of Falconridge comes to grips with a serial rapist who may be stalking their neighbourhood, say some locals. Nearly two dozen people encircled and apprehended a man outside a 7-Eleven store along Falconridge Blvd. on Sunday night, a man they thought was responsible for at least two brazen sexual attacks in their community, said one eyewitness. Residents apparently swarmed the suspect after he made crude comments to two young girls and held him until police arrived. The man was taken into custody but later released, after police confirmed he was not the rapist. It’s a graphic display of tensions mounting over the unsolved sex attacks and several other close calls she and other area residents have been privy to recently, said Trish Harris. “It’s nerve-wracking just leaving my house to get to work in the morning,” she said. “The lady that lives a couple of doors down from us caught someone trying to pry open one of her windows and trying to break into her house just the other day. “And incidents are happening in broad daylight.” Acts of vigilantism, such as the one that took place over the weekend, are not the answer, said Harris who still finds comfort in knowing her neighbours are staying alert, said Harris. “It’s not the way to go but it’s good that everybody is more aware and wanting to do something about it … that’s a bit of comfort,” she said. Pamela Morgan, lives adjacent to the alleyway that’s been the scene of the serial rapist’s crimes and next to a park her kids are no longer allowed to visit without her. “We’re not comfortable … anybody can fall prey,” she said. “I don’t want my kids growing up in fear … but unfortunately my children don’t have a lot of freedom. “It’s a shame you have to be so careful.” Police believe the attacks along Falshire Dr. N.E. — one on April 8 and a second on May 10, as well as an attempted rape on March 18 — are the work of the same man. He’s described as white, 18 to 22 years of age, 5 ft. 7 in. tall, with a buzz cut and a black ball cap. “There is a bit of tension, a lot of darkness, because you don’t know when this person will come out again,” said Morgan. Police were not available for comment. not to far from my area... Falconridge residents take action |

that's really scary. so are telephone calls. luckily, I've only had one bad phone call in my life and it came in on my parents' phone while I was visiting them. the guy was drunk and talking dirty. I listened until he finally ran out of gas and then quietly hung up. but it would have been more disturbing to me if I'd been home alone or something. |

The crowd assumed a guy making crude remarks was the rapist? Most of the stories I've seen on TV reveal they are usually someone you would never expect, with family, church affiliation etc. Why can't they let a female RMP walk the streets as a decoy? Armed, and versed in self defense with a mike on her also. |

Now there's two distinct things in that story to make me feel badly that it can happen in my country - the rapist on the prowl scaring so many people, and the fact that an innocent person (even if a lout) can get the sh*t kicked out of him by a crowd of thugs....
