News Report

Seems like they were preparing to blow up the CN Tower in Toronto, the worlds tallest structure. The report discounts that as the target, but the later news report on TV said they had been casing it.

CSIS is the Canadian CIA.

I wonder what the reaction would be (Canadian) had they accomplished their mission?

I'd heard a report recently that CSIS has collected information on terrorists in Canada. It was fairly alarming, but non-specific as to places and people.

Good to hear they acted upon that information before you all were watching towers collapse on TV.

17 or so arrested. Guess the Terror War is old news. Too politicized for any one to care.

Speaking for myself, I decided to be wary of saying anything earlier today when a guy on another forum, who b*tched and whined that we didn't do ENOUGH before, is now saying the US should tell Canada to smarten up about security! Jesus H. Christ-on-a-pogo-stick! (That's a Stephen King-ism, btw.) Talk about not pleasing some people - you're damned if you don't and damned if you do!
And apparently, the fact that two guys FROM ATLANTA came up here to assist those clowns earlier.... well, that don't mean a thing I guess....

And here I thought it was OBL and company's doings. With all our media and political crap buzzings, it probably blurs our conscienceness as to who the real enemy is. We're told it might be ourselves (I've seen the enemy and he is us). I think that may be true because we are always battling our political selves in the midst of this "war." But, to be sure, maybe we'll be more clear when it happens (a 9/11) again. Maybe not.

"I think that may be true because we are always battling our political selves in the midst of this "war.""

That is what's meant by the Pogo quote, I've seen the enemy and he is us, iow, we're are own worst enemy. And I think you're right, the partisan political squabbling, on both sides, is deterimental to fighting terrorism.

quote from link: "Sources claimed the men have no connection to al Qaeda, but were allegedly inspired by militant Islamic groups."

I heard a little of this on the news, but it hasn't been getting much press. Are they they Islamic Jihadists? Or simply some copycats looking for a few minutes of fame?

We don't know yet, aside from them being born and/or naturalized Canadians - the authorities are keeping a pretty tight lid on the details. They are scheduled for court on Tuesday, though; we might hear more then.
But the Gov't insists that they had no plans for America, just around Ontario.

(Miss Rice had some nice things to say about us today, btw... )

No need to fearUPDATED: 2006-06-05 15:02:07 MST

Klein says Alberta not a terror target

By PABLO FERNANDEZ, CALGARY SUN

Albertans have no need to fear a terrorist attack, says Premier Ralph Klein.

The premier made the comments days after the arrest of 17 alleged terror suspects in Ontario who were apparently plotting to blow up bulldings there.

Alberta has been touted as a potential target due to its rich and sprawling oil and gas industry, but Klein said today there's no reason to believe the province will be targeted or is even in danger.

"There's no need for Albertans to be concerned," said Klein, adding should a threat arise, the province is ready.

"We do have an emergency plan and a security plan in place."

But how a potential threat will be dealt with or how the province would react to an attack, he does not know, the premier admitted.

"I don't know what that security plan is and they won't tell me," said Klein.

"But I'm informed a very comprehensive security plan is in place to protect our oil industry and other industries that keep our economy moving in Alberta."

The premier said there has been "no evidence brought to my attention," that any Alberta facilities have ever been targeted by terrorists.

Although he could shed little light on the status of the province's emergency response plan, Klein did commend officers in Ontario for thwarting the potential attacks.

"I'm satisfied also that the law enforcement agencies involved were on top of this al-Qaida ring and were able to crack it," he said.

"It represents good police work in Canada."

Calgary has all the big head offices for oil and gas. They have closed down town and evacuated a yr or so ago. That is a constant subject here as is the Stampeed re targets.

I don't know if I'd be so cocksure like Klein - I wouldn't want to be working in our Edmonton refinery these days, or the others there, or the Trans Mountain Pipeline.

Come to think of it, I might even think twice about the terminal I DID work at - at full capacity, our storage ran way into the tens of millions of litres....

Well, while ALberta certainly makes sense to a sane man, a terrorist is more likely to hit a more symbolic and familiar target, say Montreal.
